Ian's POV
"Ugh!" I groaned staring at myself in the mirror Jace had in his room.
"I don't have anything nice to wear... what is Grace's family going to think of me when I show up in ripped jeans and a worn Blink 182 concert shirt?"
"They wouldn't even let you in the house," Jace said laughing as he walked into his room with a plate of pizza rolls in one hand and two Cokes in the other.
"Thanks for the support bro," I said flopping down on top of his mattress.
"Anytime. Now stop whining like a little school girl and just wear some of my old stuff. I still have church clothes that I only wore like once. They should fit you," Jace said, turning his back to me and looking through his large black dresser.
I had been staying with Jace for about three days, ever since the big fight I had with my dad on Tuesday night. I had showed up to Jace's house unexpectedly and explained to Mrs. Ledger that my dad had gone away on business for a few days and I didn't want to stay home alone. She didn't seem like she believed me one bit, but took pity on me because I was practically her son and let me stay.
I had explained the real story to Jace later that night and he hadn't brought up my dad once, knowing how touchy the subject was. I'd also explained everything that had happened with Grace in the past few days, so he was all caught up with the freak show that was my life.
It was now Friday afternoon and I had been standing in front of Jace's mirror ever since I got home from school. Jace still couldn't go to school because of his suspension but I had to because if he didn't one of the office assistants would call my house... and that was a recipe for bad news.
I knew that I would have to go back home and make up with my dad soon, but I wasn't fully healed yet. His words still replayed in my mind every time I tried to sleep and images of his fist hitting my tender skin came to life whenever I got in a car or saw the large red mark it had left on my forehead. Yet another scar my bad boy shield would take care of.
"What about this?" Jace said throwing a shirt and a pair pants at me and tearing me from my thoughts. The shirt was a navy blue button up with a small pocket on the left side close to the end of the sleeve. The pants were the same pair I had on now, without any rips.
I threw them both on and stared at myself in the mirror for the hundredth time since I got back from school.
"Looks good, now hurry or you're going to be late!" Jace said ushering me out the door and towards my car.
"Thanks man," I said fist bumping him and hopping into my car.
"Go get 'em tiger," Jace teased and I laughed
pulling out of his driveway and into the street.
                              ----------
I pulled into the Thompson's driveway fifteen minutes later, congratulating myself on being two minutes early.
I checked my dark, messily quiffed hair in one of my mirrors and bit my lip ring. 'This is it... I thought to myself, 'the big moment'.
I stepped towards the front of the house and held my fist over the door for several seconds, my nervousness getting the better of me.
I finally got out of my own head and quietly knocked on the door. As soon as my fist hit the freshly painted white frame it flew open revealing Grace's mom smiling brightly at me.
"Grace! Ian's here!" She yelled and gave me a small smile. Telling me it was nice to see me again, and how I looked nice and all this other crap I wasn't listening to because I was too busy looking at the girl who stood at the top of the stairs.
Her mom left us after realizing I wasn't paying attention, saying something that I wasn't listening to at all.
Grace looked absolutely stunning and I found myself holding my breath as she walked down the stairs and gave me a small smile before tripping over the last step and falling into my arms.
                              "Hi," I said laughing.
"Hi," she giggled as I helped her stand back up right as she apolgized for falling into me.
"It's okay, I'm used to girls falling all over me,"I said smirking. NO NO BAD BOY IAN GO AWAY.
She just rolled her eyes and smiled at me again before heading into the kitchen and telling me to follow.
I stayed close behind, hoping she would trip again so I could redo the whole apologizing thing.
As we walked in, her parents were mumbling quietly to each other. I only managed to catch a few words before Grace entered their line of vision and they quieted down.
"Hello again, Ian," Grace's dad said shaking my hand.
"Nice to see you again, sir," I said smiling back at him, and trying to hold in my laughter at Grace and his surprised expressions. They would never get old to me.
"Dinners ready!" Mrs. Thompson called and was answered with two screaming voices coming from upstairs as an older looking girl,
about 19 years old, and a younger boy, around 15, raced downstairs.
I GOT HERE FIRST!" the girl screamed at the boy as he came sprinting a millisecond after.
"NO I DID" the boy screamed back as he almost ran into me.
                              I just laughed.
So this is what having siblings would've been like? This is what a family looks like? There was so much I was missing out on, which made me even angrier at my dad for depriving me of a childhood.
Grace laughed, explaining she was the mature one as her dad yelled at John (the boy) and Noel (the girl) for acting immature as they all sat down at the table, John immediately starting to argue with Grace about how he was more mature than her.
'This sure is a while lot more fun than cleaning the vomit off your unconscious dad'.
I thought as tears threatened to spill from my eyes before I quickly rubbed them away with the side of my napkin. At this moment I decided that for as long as I lived I would never forgive my dad and I would never care
about him again. I would find somewhere to
live and then I could leave for college and hopefully never have to look back.
It would just make everything easier...
