I fell asleep to corn fields and country roads, yet when I awoke I was in the city. I paused trying to examine the street signs for clues to where I could be in the world. Melman must have noticed the confusion on my face, "San Francisco" he said slowly. My heart sank into my butt, thinking about how close we were to LA. My mind filled with thoughts of running away, trying to catch a cab to LA. Jc was so close yet so far away, I wondered if he had a feeling in the pit of his stomach that told him I was near. "We just have to head over to the office in order to get you ready and prepare the crew for the mission. We only have till tomorrow morning to prepare."
"So this time tomorrow I could be free?" I said hopeful.
"Well I'm not sure I would call it free, but this time tomorrow the suspect could be locked away. Which would allow for you to safely live your life." Mel said without taking his eyes off of the road.
"Safely, freely. Just about the same thing," I said with a bit of a smile. Knowing that there was even the slightest possibility that I could be in Jc's arms again so soon was worth being bait for a crazed mad man that was after me in hopes of revenge for his father that I put in jail based on my testimony only.
"Umm, Skylar?" Mel said his voice shaking, "I have to ask you not to peek out the windows for you safety of course."
"Umm alright." I said shrinking myself down in the passenger seat so I could only see the clouds, tops of buildings, and tree tops out the window.
"Yeah, that would be safer." Mel's voice shook again, something that was very unlike him. I couldn't help but wonder if there was something he wasn't telling me or perhaps if he was more afraid of me being bait than I was. I stared out the window again, finding comfort in the bits of clouds I could still see. However they were interrupted by the top of what appeared to be a charter bus for a breif moment. I glanced to Mel, his gaze drifted from the road ahead to the bus next to us.
"What's going on?" I said slowly staying low in my seat.
"Oh nothing, just one of those tour buses," Mel said speeding up as we past.
"Like a celebrity?" I said in shock that I was possibly missing out on seeing someone incredibly famous.
"No!" Mel shouted, "Umm no, like a tour bus for tours of the city!"
"Oh, I see." I said shifting in my seat trying to remain unseen yet still comfortable. "Are we there yet?"
"You haven't said that since the first trip we took together," Mel laughed, turning the corner sharply. "And for the first time I can answer this question with a yes."
