Jane sat in the back room quietly with her hands intertwined upon her skirt. She wasn't the same, no longer did she smile or hold her head high. Instead, she looked to her feet with her hair acting as a golden curtain. Uta knew then that that day had done something permanent to that mischievous teen.
"Would you like something to drink?" He offered, no knowing what else to say.
"No... I just came here to talk, apologise at least" she suddenly rambled, causing a smirk to curl at the corner of his lips. With her words, Uta silently sat down on the red, leather sofa they had used before for other activities. Some he couldn't help turn red at.
"Go ahead, enlighten me" he spoke calmly.
"I'm... I shouldn't have said what I did-" Jane began, peeking through her eyelashes to see him observing her every move, "- I was young and I didn't know what I was doing... I was scared and I'm hoping you will understand that",
"I haven't heard the words yet Jane".
At the way he said her name, shivers danced across her pale skin, just like they did eight years ago.
"I... I'm sorry, I apologise and I hope you will forgive me" she said with an undertone of fear lacing the sweetness of her voice. Uta couldn't help but chuckle at the nervous disposition she was dressing herself in. Therefore, he reached out to push a strip of gold behind her ear.
At the cold sensation of his finger tips skimming her cheek bone, she sucked in a sharp gulp of air. He had her wanting to go back to before. But, things weren't so simple, nothing was anymore.
"What if I don't want to forgive you?" He questioned to have Jane whip around in a panic.
"But- you said...-" she breathed out at the realisation, "- you cruel man!" She exclaimed, before proceeding to whack at his arms until a playful giggle escaped her lips with his laboured laughter.
The whole scene was light and cheerful until they calmed down and came back to the daunting reality of blood and segregation.
"I forgive you Jane" he replied, taking her hand,
"Good... That's good" she mumbled to suddenly realise the contact between the two.
Was it right for her to stay as is? Was it right to be by his side and be okay with his... Appetite? If Jane was going to be honest with herself, she couldn't. Especially, when she saw the mason jar of eyes sitting on the shelf. And Uta couldn't expect her to when he caught her gaze.
"You should be going, it's quite late" he said, allowing her to pull away at will.
"Yes, but I'm guessing the time won't change anything. I'll still have Amber shouting at me when I get home".
"I can only wish that you to get back in one piece",
"Me too" she smiled before walking to the door.
For some odd reason, her hand remained on the doorknob while he stood behind Jane, waiting for her to leave his life once again. He couple not lie and say he didn't want it however, he would have to bare with the fact that their differences set them apart by miles.
"Uta-" she called, still not turning to meet his eyes but he could feel the saddened smile, "- I did like you... A lot. I'm just upset we didn't have more time".
"Even if I said please?" He wondered honestly, knowing she had never heard the word escape his lips.
"Even if it was a promise".
And with that, Jane moved forward with her eyes refusing to tear up. She had done it.
I met the old you and the new.
The End
