Just a few minutes ago, I had read the ever so mysterious letter Carter had sent me and now, I have made my decision. Although, I will be bringing my pocket knife if he actually turns out to be a rapist serial killer or something.
Hey it's good to be prepared right?
It was approaching 10pm and my parents still seemed to be awake. I changed into a clean black hoodie, black leggings and black sneakers so it would be quite hard to see me lurking in the shadows. However, I still needed a way to get out. After stuffing a flashlight and my pocketknife in my pocket and stuffing pillows under my blanket to make it look like I was still peacefully sleeping, I attempted to climb out the window.
There were vines growing as high as my window so I climbed down them, after slipping once or twice, and accidentally cutting my hand on a thorn (or was it a sharp piece of wood?) my feet were finally on the ground and my parents didn't hear a thing. I grabbed my board but didn't use it until I got to the bus stop, which is a few minutes walk from the house.
I quickly approached the school and because of how dark and unlit it was, I could only see the headlights of a car. Carter's I assumed. I came closer and there he was, sitting on his hood drinking a can of coke. He seemed to have spotted me and smiled.
"I knew you'd come." He smirked.
"Just show whatever it is you're going to show to me already." I said sternly, pretending to be mad. He gave a quick nod and opened the door for me. He walked over to the driver' slide of the car and shut the door behind him. He turned the metal key and the engine roared to life, and we drove off.
"Where are we going?" I asked curiously as I shifted to look at him. "Please tell me you're not a rapist, or a serial killer who's going to stab me and bury me out of sight."
"You have a very active imagination." He laughed but still kept his focus on the road. "No I'm not some dangerous criminal and be patient, you going to love it."
"Is this a road trip? Because tomorrow is a school day." I asked a few minutes later. We have been on the road for about 10 minutes now.
"Of sorts." He replied.
"Are we there yet?" I whined like a child.
"Patience grasshoper. All good things come to those who wait." He said calmly and I giggled a little. "And yes we're already here."
I looked outside my window and I couldn't see anything but grass running across the land and a bunch of trees. I went outside to look around. There was nothing. I looked over at Carter who was looking for something in the trunk and he motioned for me to go further. I walked cautiously and realized that it was a bluff. And that it was overlooking the city.
I gasped in awe. "It's so beautiful." I said standing on the edge of the bluff. All the lights of the city were shining and blinking, as if it were a sea of stars. The moon, on this fine night, was big and yellow and looking down at us. It was windy and I spread out my arms, as if rose on the titanic.
But then Carter isn't any jack so no love story here.
"Be careful." He said as he closed the trunk. He carried a thick blanket and a big basket with him. Perhaps we were going to have a midnight snack? He put down the basket and spread the blue blanket on the damp grass. It had to be blue? Really? He brought out two plates and two plastic containers which held 4 Nutella sandwiches in one and marshmallows in the other. We both sat down and began to eat our sandwiches.
"I was 10 when she died and she was only 9." He said looking out into the city. I remained silent because I was guessing that he was talking about his sister.
That's why he left me at the cafe. I thought.
"We were on our way home from an amazing family road trip at the beach. And then, a drunk driver driving a six wheeler just appeared on the hillside and..." He said trailing off. Oh shit. Was he gonna cry. Please don't cry.
"She was my only sister." He said out of silence. "I lost my best friend that day. And over there," he pointed towards the curvy road, "was where it all happened." I didn't know what to say. I didn't expect to know that Carter actually had a lost sister.
"I come here often and I look after this place. It's like a garden. If it dies then she dies." Silence again. "I know it's pretty stupid."
"No it's not!" I exclaimed. "It's... It's wonderful. I'm sorry for exploding at you the other day."
"It's okay. I get it. I'm the one who should be apologizing here."
"Apology accepted." I said and pulled him into a hug. I've never seen this side of Carter before. He was always egotistic ally smiling and smirking at everyone it was weird to see him sad.
"Can I ask a question?" I broke the silence. "How is it that you and your parents survived the car accident and she didn't?"
"Maybe I was just lucky. I came out of that car crash with a broken arm and a broken leg and lots of stitches." He said as he looked at the sky. I fell silent again.
"Thank you." I said. His face jerked up and looked at me with curiosity. "For this. For everything."
"My pleasure." He said. "Now I'm going to ask a question." It was my turn to be surprised. "Who was that guy helping you unload your groceries?" I couldn't help but let out a small smile.
"He's just an old friend." I giggled. "Why? Are you jealous?" I smirked and he smiled back.
"Yes." He said and I was shocked.
After eating our delicious marshmallow and Nutella sandwiches, we drove back to the school. We became cautious again, making sure that we were quiet and stealthy enough for no one to recognize us. I thanked him for the dinner and the weirdest thing happened.
I felt his lips crash on mine.
