"Wake up sleeping beauty!" My mom calls from the kitchen. I rub my eyes and groggily stand from my bed and drag my feet to the bathroom, where I brush my teeth and freshen up.

After getting dressed in a knit blue sweater, tucked in a pair of skinny dark-washed jeans, with black flats to finish my outfit off, I grabbed my bag and walked down the stairs to the kitchen, where my mother was humming to herself as she cooked breakfast.

"Morning." I greeted her as I pulled out a chair and sat at the table. She smiled warmly at me and laid a plate of eggs and bacon in front of me. I smiled back at her and began to eat.

"Hey where's dad?" I say noticing his absence. My mother sits beside me and eats her sandwich.

"Sick with the flu." She says shaking her head as I finish my breakfast. "That's too bad. Will you tell him I said get well soon?" I grab my bag and make my way to the front door.

"Will do sweetie! Have fun!" She says and I shut the door behind me. Is it even possible for anyone to have fun at school?

Deciding not to skate to school, I walk slowly on the sidewalk and appreciate the weather. The woodsy smell lingered in the air, and the morning breeze brushed against my bare skin, sending shivers down my spine. It was a cold morning, despite the school year coming to an end.

"Hey girl." Jessica says joining me. I smile at her and greet her good morning, and she returns the kind gesture as we walk up the road.

"Hey where's Beth and Lillian?" I say cocking my eyebrow. Jessica kicks a pebble up the road. "Went to school early. Prepared for a project I think." She says, unsure of her answer. I simply shrug it off as we approach the school.

As we walk through the parking lot, I notice a girl laying on the pavement, with the contents of her bag scattered everywhere. I run to her and help her gather her things.

She looks up at me an both of us are in shock. "Monica? What happened to you?" I say reaching for her lipstick.

She was no longer the Monica I saw back when I was still a lowly loser. Her black curly hair was now messy and untamed, and her clothes were now dull and lose.

"I tripped obviously." She says bluntly as we manage to gather her things into her bag. I notice a big stain on her shirt and suddenly smell coffee. She shakes her head and the brim of he eyes fill with tears. Jessica runs beside me and her eyes fill with disgust.

"Lets get you to the bathroom." I say leading he inside the school, ignoring the funny stares that were thrown my way. I tell Jessica to lead her to the bathroom as I grab something from my locker. As I run in the bathroom, I notice Jessica waiting outside, her ams crossed across her chest.

"Why are you helping her? She was a total bitch to us." She says roughly. I shake my head and sling my arm around her shoulder. "And do you want to be a bitch to her? C'mon Jess, we don't wanna stoop down to her level."

We enter the bathroom and I hand her the spare clothes I keep in my locker. She shuffles inside the cubical and I hear her pants fall to the floor. After a minute, she walks outside of the cubical in a pink-sheer long-sleeved top and a black skater skirt. She takes a look at herself in the mirror and turns to us, her eyes still puffy and red from crying. "Why are you helping me?" She mumbles softly.

"Every girl needs a friend." I smile at her and pull her into a hug, and I see a few tears fall from her eyes.

"Thank you." She whispers. "Im so sorry." Monica says over and over again and I look at Jessica while rubbing Monica's back, and she gives me a nod, telling me I did good.

During lunch, as Lillian and Beth join us, I notice Monica walk into the cafeteria double doors, and wave at her to come and sit with us.

"Are you crazy?" Beth says frowning at me. Jessica pats her on the back and chuckles. "She is."

Monica stands in front of us and some people in the cafeteria stare at us, waiting for someone to utter a word. Beth stands up and clears her throat. "Monica." She says acknowledging her presence. Monica's eyes fill with fear but Beth still holds her ice cold gaze. "Would you like to sit with us?"

Monica is taking my surprise by Beth's kind gesture and she stares at me with curiosity, and I nod at her, sending a message that all is well. She gratefully takes a seat in front of me and we eat our lunch.

"That outfit is killer." Lillian smiles enthusiastically at Monica and she blushes. "Thanks but they're actually Blair's. She let me wear them for the day because someone spilled coffee on my shirt this morning." Monica says shyly.

They all turn to look at me and I shake my head. "You know what Monica? You can have them." I smile at her.

And she smiles back.
