Miu Iruma was a rather unconventional girl. In many aspects. In her attitudes, in her speech, in her dress. But somehow that never reduced from her desirability, if anything, it made her all the more alluring to many who were able to rest eyes on her.
However, she so did not do herself many favours. She was controversial, and in fact had managed to upset a great many people, the majority of those being girls she'd rubbed the wrong way with her bucket loads of confidence, or the countless boys she'd rejected, or used once and kicked to the curb. The act of doing so had never really mattered to her. It was only the aftermath that Miu could not deal with. The sharp stares and Glares burning into her back, how she knew there was alway someone watching and waiting for her to fail, to drop her guard, just to mock and laugh at her.
Most of the time, she was not phased by this, her confidence and demaor was almost flawless when she had a reason to show off to all of the people with their eyes glued to her.
But it was times like now on which she became most vulnerable.
A group of girls were sat across the coffee shop from her, ones she knew from school, staring and giggling in their clique like vultures while she sat alone, nursing her caramel latte.
She had no doubt that those girls had followed her here after hearing her bragging to a friend about a date she'd organised with one of the hottest boys she'd seen. No doubt, they were looking for a story, a piece of gossip to bring back and spread around - hey, guess what, this happened, isn't Miu such a let down?
In all fairness, she really had organised to meet up with the boy. In fact, she was presently waiting, and it had already been 15 minutes since the time she was supposed to meet him.
She didn't want to have to admit that she might have been stood up, but it was beginning to look that way. And with these girls circling her like vultures, the situation was getting increasingly bad. No doubt their phones would come out soon, and the recording and pictures of her sat alone, embarrassed, would soon begin to circulate around the school, maybe even connections outside of school. No doubt it would hit the drama circle at least. Or, that's how Miu felt anyway, perhaps the problem of the awaiting judgement was clouding her perspective a little.
"Miu? Are you alright?" A voice startled Miu and she jumped, her kneecap smacking against the underside of the small table and almost toppling off the high stool.
"Shit!" She cursed loudly and steadied herself, one hand gripping on her knee, and glancing up quickly. "P-Pooichi?"
"Ah, sorry, I didn't mean to scare you." Shuichi gave a weak chuckle, awkwardly resting one hand on the table top, glancing around the coffee shop bashfully.
"I'm f-fine." Miu muttered quickly, her own cheeks turning a light bashful pink, nervously sipping at her caramel latte.
"What are you doing alone here?" He gave her a concerned glance and stooped his hat slightly lower after noticing all the sharp looks he was being sent by the gaggle of girls.
"I was supposed to be meeting someone, but he's-" Miu took a surreptitious glance at her phone to check on the time. She shrivelled like a shrinking violet when she saw the digital tone display over the lock screen of her phone. "20 minutes late..."
"Eh, Miu-" Shuichi gave an awkward laugh. "Are you sure he's not stood you up?"
"Y-You think I don't know--?!" Miu blurted, her face turning red in embarrassment at having to admit she really had been ditched before the guy had even got there. "I-I can't leave, I'm being watched.. I have to think of something."
"Hey, just... Wait here." Shuichi said, and set his rucksack down by the stood opposite her at the high table, before he turned and headed up to the small counter in the coffee shop. She nervously sipped at her caramel latte, watching as Shuichi went up to the counter, placing an order and coming back a few moments later with his own steaming cup of black coffee.
"Wh-What are you doing?" She asked bashfully as he heaved himself up onto the seat opposite her, placing his cup down after taking a long sip.
"You said you'd been stood up, right? I worked out pretty quickly those girls are watching you." Shuichi's face flushed a soft pink and he lowered the brim of his hat over his eyes lightly. "I-I just thought maybe, it would be better for you to be seen with someone than no one at all, you know.."
"P-Pooichi--" Miu blushed in shock, eyes widening a fraction. She had never really paid him much mind before, so she wondered why he was being so considerate about her and situation, let alone sensitive enough to realise something was off in the first place. She choked out a weak "Wh-Why--?"
"W-Well, I wouldn't like to think you were being hurt by this guy, even if it were only from him not showing up." His face lightly flushed too and he popped the lid off of his coffee cup to avert his eyes into the dark liquid as he gave it a gentle slosh around the cup." S-Someone is better than no one, right? Even if it is only me..."
Miu stared at him for a long time in consideration.
"E-Especially if it's you.." She responded quickly and quietly before busying herself with slurping from the caramel latte.
"Wh-What?" Shuichi almost choked and Miu watched the blush creeping up his neck, and in fact found it oddly endearing, not that she would ever admit that so easily.
"If ya really wanna make sure I don't get hurt, you'll have to meet up with me again sometime." Miu stated, accompanied by the twirling a lock of blonde hair, and slowly, a bashful smile came to Shuichi's face once he finally caught on.
"I think we could arrange that.."
