"Dear (Y/N)," He typed.
"You'll never know how much love I have for you. When I see you pick up my sister, I am overwhelmed with joy. The way you both experience the same rapport is heart-warming and admiring. I remember the night when you brought over a little hologram projecter that seemed to bring the solar system to our room."
Matt grinned as he reminisced about the night Katie was so distressed about receiving her first F. She was in the 3rd grade at the time and she got almost all of the answers wrong on a planetary exam.
He remembered how she didn't have enough time to study for the test, for she was extra busy helping her mother with the house work she had. Their father was rarely home since he spent most of his time at the Garrison.
Matt had remembered (Y/N) had known almost everything to now about the planets in their solar system. Hell, (Y/N) knew a whole lot outside of their solar system. He knew you would have something that could potentially help Katie out.
"The way she stared at those holographic planets when you were giving a small lesson on what a gas giant was was hilarious. Her mouth was agape in awe while yours was busy talking about how Uranus actually had rings," He snorted. Uranus. That will always be funny. "I never knew my sister could love someone more than her own brother, but it makes sense that it was you."
He didn't know where to go from there. He didn't know how to break the news that he was going to the Garrison. He didn't want to tell (Y/N) that he has to leave, but this is what he wanted. Hell, this is what he dreamed of. The feeling of walking in new territory, meeting new people, and learning how to be a pilot.
He knew that if he didn't go, it would be a total missed opportunity. But, at this point, it seemed like the both of them would never get back in touch.
(Y/N) never replied to his calls or his messages anymore. Infact, getting in touch with them was almost impossible. Whenever he'd stopped by (Y/N)'s place, they were never there. And neither was their mother or sister.
He began to worry, and that worry began to rub off on Katie. She'd noticed that once Matt came home from school, he'd frantically race to their house to try to catch (Y/N) going inside. But somehow, you managed to beat him to the punch, never being caught outside your house like you've used to.
He'd rarely catch them at school anymore, but he could've sworn he heard Mr. Collier talking to them one day. He heard something along the lines of "Not deserving" and "Piloting" but everything else was a jumbled mess. He had hoped that he wasn't trying to lecture (Y/N), because it would go in one ear and out the other. He didn't have time to eavesdrop.
"(Y/N), I've tried my damnedest to get in contact with you. But you're just never around. Though, now I know why."
There was one day where he managed to get a few words in with (Y/N) before his departure. But a few words is never enough.
(Y/N) was called down to the school's office one morning, for an unknown reason. The staff said it was an emergency and that they needed them as soon as possible. Whatever is was, they knew it wasn't good.
But whilst they walked the halls, they bumped into a familiar figure.
"Oh, I'm sorry...Matt." (Y/N) paused. They haven't seen Holt in...ages. And (Y/N) felt completely awful that they haven't at least told him they were okay in a while.
"(Y/N)? W-where have you been? I've been so worried about you." Matt's eyes widened, a swarm of feelings overcoming him.
He couldn't tell if he was relieved to see them, angered that they haven't spoken to him, or saddened by the look on (Y/N)'s face.
However, he pushed all those feelings aside and embraced (Y/N). But they didn't hug back.
When Matt felt the lack of arms on his back, he let them go and scanned their face.
"I've been...around," They looked down, knowing that wasn't the answer Matt was looking for. "I-I have to go the office now, I'll catch you later, okay?"
However, before they can even take a few steps, they felt a strong grip on their shoulder. They were quickly spun around by Matt, who wouldn't take that as an answer.
"No! I've worried about where you have been for a couple months now, (Y/N)! I've lost so much sleep over you!" Matt's face reddened in deep anger and frustration. His volume drew a few looks from students, some of the staff just waiting for things to escalate, "Katie misses you so much and you just suddenly show up out of the blue thinking everything is okay?! You have no right to be so vague, (Y/N). Tell me, where have you been?!"
(Y/N)'s head dropped, embarrassed from all the eyes that were on them. "Matt, I'm sorry-"
"No, you don't have the right to be sorry. You've lost that chance, (Y/N)."
(Y/N) met Matt's eyes harshly, eyes glossed over. They quickly scanned the hall, which seemed to be getting smaller by the minute to them. They wiped their nose before quickly staring back Matt.
"I was, ahem," (Y/N) sniffled, "I was at the hospital."
There were a few collective gasps at that point, before (Y/N) pried off Matt's hands and ran down to the office.
"I shouldn't have been so harsh. I should have realized there was a reason why you went M.I.A. I'm sorry for that and everything thing I said. I even told Katie what happened and she hit the back of my head AND called me an idiot. She was right." Matt sat at his desk, trying his best to not let his sadness get the best of him.
"But now, I have to leave. I was accepted to attend the Galaxy Garrison, and become a pilot. I get to join along side my father in his explorations, and trust me, I wish you could come. We could use your planetary knowledge." He looked to the corner of his desk and noticed the little holographic projecter that you gave to him and Katie.
"This is hard to type out and honestly I wish I wasn't doing this. I hope this gets to you. Goodbyes suck, (Y/N). So I'm not going to say goodbye, I'm going to say I love you. I love you with my whole being and I hope whatever you needed to go to the hospital for is no longer an issue in your life." He sniffled.
"Love Matt."
