"You really think I'm popular?" Sehun asked as he smiled one of his rare smiles shyly.
"If you keep showing that poker face of yours, the entire South Korea will love you. Can't you see how those girls, those queenkas, stare at you? I-I think they find you attractive! I heard one say to another that she wanted you to be more than her eyecandy..." You grinned back, nudging him.
"I don't really care, Se Mi ah~ After all, I do have her. And she is so much more valuable than any of them." He said pointedly in reply, looking just a little put off.
Her. From young, it had never crossed your mind that Sehun would ever want to know more about another girl, let alone love her. Perhaps it was your childish emotional attachment to your childhood best friend, or maybe your heart was telling the truth about your true feelings towards him.
Whatever it was, you just hoped that you would continue to sit on that special throne in Sehun's heart, that throne labelled 'Best Friend'. And that you would stay there forever, unforgotten.
Or, maybe, your heart was whispering, maybe it was time to change kingdoms?
After school, Sehun caught up to you, his papers all askew in his canvas bag. "What subject will we be studying today?"
"Math," You said, smiling. "You know I'm terrible at Math."
"I know everything about you, Se Mi-ah," He groaned. "But I'm not much better either."
"Oh Sehun, don't pretend to be humble. Just get going!" You yanked his hair gently and the both of you ran down the pavement in the direction of your home, laughing.
Upon reaching your home, you laid out your study materials on the study table, and Sehun, seated beside you, took out his calculator. Flipping your textbook to a page, you read the content and intoned, "Addition within brackets."
Q1. 10 (3 {4+5} +2 ) = ?
"How do you do this question?" You asked Sehun, tapping him lightly on the shoulder.
"Se Mi-ah, what would you and I add up to? Nothing?" Sehun muttered in reply. Unfortunately, you didn't hear his reply.
"Hm?" You looked at him. "What did you say?"
"N-Nothing...I-I have to leave now," Grabbing his bag, Sehun left and you sat there in shock, until you heard the loud sound of the door slamming.
-
A week passed. Two. Three. Sehun did not come to school at all. Was he angry with you? Was he perhaps, tired of studying with you? Either way, you knew in your heart that Sehun was not happy.
One day, Sehun stumbled into the classroom, and everyone fell silent, watching him as he took his seat beside you quietly. His hair was no longer its soft, slightly messy self, in fact, it looked like he had just come out of a rabbit hole. His perfect face was wrinkled in...confusion? Anger? And most of all, he did not even acknowledge you.
Against your will, you found yourself saying, "S-Sehun?"
Oh Sehun, the boy I love so much.
Oh Sehun, the boy I met a decade ago.
Oh Sehun, you're still the same boy I met long ago, yet there have been many changes. You've grown taller, your voice has deepened, and your features have become sharper and much more defined than your chubby, round face in kindergarten.
Yet, why do I feel that it's wrong to love you? Is it because of my weakening heart, gasping its last words, warning me that it will only be a one-sided love?
