Painless Farewells
"Now, be kind to the new student, everybody, I don't want to be calling up any more parents to complain." The teacher ushered the new student into the class. It was a fairly tall boy. His light brown bangs fell into his heartwarming orbs as he flashed a winning smile to the class.
Cute, that was what you thought.
Shocked, that was what you were, when the teacher said, "Please sit beside Song Yi, arasso?" Song Yi. That was you. The boy looked a little confused and the teacher pointed towards your seat. He nodded and followed the instruction.
Noticing that he seemed to fall a little silent, you nudged him with your elbow and promptly introduced yourself. "Annyeonghaseyo, Song Yi-imnida!"
"Baekhyun imnida. Please speak slowly~" He smiled again and unknowingly, your heart was captured. His smile...there was completely no way to describe it. It was full of emotion, but you just couldn't pinpoint any emotion in particular. Pain? Happiness? Anger? What was behind those eyes, you would never know.
Meanwhile, you had taken care to speak slowly after Baekhyun had requested for you to do so. What was his intention behind this? You were curious.
After school, Baekhyun piled up his books, bid you a hurried farewell and left the classroom. You shrugged your shoulders and departed towards your aunt's house for the afternoon as your parents were overseas and wanted her to take care of you.
Upon reaching your aunt's house, you opened the door only to have an avalanche of books fall on your foot. "Medicine 101?" "How to identify a disease?" "Overdose and its causes"?
Your aunt was training to be a doctor, there was no doubt about it. Printouts containing information about medicine were scattered all over the dining table. After a moment of rubbing your foot gingerly, you proceeded to your aunt's study room, where you knew she would be.
Placing your school bag on the floor, you entered the room. "Annyeong! I'm really really sorry but my medical exam is in three days! How can I ever finish studying! You teenagers don't have to worry about studies, all you girls care about are boys!"
Chuckling a little, you remembered something, or rather, someone. Boys. "Sangmo? Do you happen to know someone called Baekhyun?"
You heard the sound of shattering glasses, and looked up. Your aunt had broken a stained glass decoration on her table. "Don't mind that~ Why, yes I do. He's a fine young kid, why'd you ask? I hope I've gotten the right Baekhyun but there aren't many Koreans in Baekhyun anyway. Oops. I mean Baekhyuns in Korea!"
Smiling, you sat down on the floor, not minding if it was infested with some cancer causing bacteria. It was Baekhyun the two of you were talking about, and the way he smiled, the way he talked, even if it was only for a moment, interested you. He was interesting in so many different levels that it would take a book or more to describe him.
"Tell me more."
"I knew Baekhyun's mother when I was still working at that Japanese restaurant a couple of years ago. That time, I wanted to be a chef, not a doctor. She introduced me to her son, Baekhyun, a delightful ten-year old then. However, he had a flaw..." She paused, looking a little sad. Your heart pounded. What flaw?
"He became deaf after a certain car accident and when I talked to him, he couldn't understand me. I hope he's better now. How do you know him?"
You couldn't believe your ears. Wait, that was slightly insulting to him. No wonder he asked you to speak slowly! He was trying to read your lips. When you spoke to reply your aunt, it came out in a disorganized clutter.
