Percy POV
It wasn't a dream or hallucination this time. Tartarus's influence was strong and controlling; it urged me to stop fighting. To give up. It was the same power I felt when I first met him with Annabeth, when I involuntarily dropped Riptide and accepted defeat.

I was speechless, my sight glued to the bottomless pits of his eyes, swirling hypnotically. I could see the souls of many trapped in trinkets around his waist, and my heart skipped a beat when I saw Bob and Small Bob. The two were cursed to endure eternal torment by sacrificing themselves so Annabeth and I could escape.

"No," I said, forcing my face to drop from the horrific sight. The guilt grew heavy in my chest, and tears filled my eyes.

Raven moved closer to me, her face betraying the fear she felt. She caught my gaze, trying to find reassurance in it.

She wouldn't find what she was looking for from me.

"Believe it or not, Hecate is an excellent craftsman," Tartarus said over the screams of monsters, a trace of satisfaction in his words. "I see those cuffs are working perfectly."

The guards behind us nodded in agreement. The leader chuckled, like it was the most comedic thing he'd ever seen. It was a mortifying situation that I didn't want to be reminded of.

"Leave us!" Tartarus's voice boomed at the men.

Quickly, all of the evil mortals- or whoever the Hades they were -left.  It didn't relieve the tension like I'd hoped, and my palms began sweating even more.

"Hecate is helping you?" I said disgustedly, finding my voice.

Tartarus reared his ugly head back in laughter. "You are assuming things, stupid demigod. Hecate is no longer of service to us. Let's just say, her time was up."

My mind wrapped around what he said.

It actually made sense. Hecate had been made into a pawn in order to control my powers and take away Riptide; after making the cuffs, she was no longer of use to them. That meant two gods were now dead, and Zeus could find out at any mometn.

I hated how the goddess of marriage and family treated Annabeth- not to mention some of the other gods- but I knew she would never betray her husband. All she cared about was keeping her family togethor, even if it was in her own, sadistic way.

"Why are you doing this?!" I exclaimed through gritted teeth. "I already escaped you, fair and square. You're just a coward, hiding behind men while they do your dirty work!"

This wasn't the right thing to say. Tartarus's face changed into that of a snarl, and he stood up quickly.

"The only reason you are here is because I willed it! The only reason you are alive is because I willed it! Do not think for a second that you have any power here."
