Chapter 3 (P. 2)

Lea nodded her head slightly, coming out from her spot and gazing up at Dust with her ruby-red eyes. "You look like Mommy..." She stated quietly, obviously referring to Horror.

Dust fell silent, his smile slowly turning sad and broken.

"I... I guess I kinda do, huh..." Dust said quietly, gazing down at the small child for a moment, then glancing down.

"Are you hungry? We have food, if you want," he offered, looking to Red and Sci.

"Yes. The monster's haven't brought me any food yet." She calmly stated, looking at Dust's hand shyly. "Did you...How do you know me? I know that daddy, didn't like people knowing about me, and he hurt mommy...So how do you know I exist?" Lea asked, gazing up at Dust, and then his hand again.

"Your mommy told me about you," Dust said after a little hesitation. "He... Told me... T-told me that he wanted me to take care of you. If... If that's okay, of course..."

He noticed how Lea seemed to be gazing at his hand and gaze a slight, encouraging smile, no matter how broken his expression was, offering his hand to the other gently, his eyes sad.

'She's so precious... Just like Horror...'

Lea hesitated, before happily taking Dust's hand, hugging it. "So you're my new daddy then?" She asked hopefully, looking up at Dust with hopeful eyes.

Dust gave a soft laugh, his eyes shining with tears.

"I...Yeah. Yeah, if that's okay," he said quietly.

"Wow!" She stated, gazing up at Dust in awe, before turning her attention to Red and Sci, who had been watching. "Who are they?" She asked.

Dust smiled softly, wiping away his unshed tears with his free hand.

"They're my friends. Red and Sci," he said quietly, gesturing to each of the two in turn.

"Hello." Sci said, smiling and waving. Red however, simply smiled at Lea, and gestured towards the bag Dust had. 'She'll want food' he was trying to say.

Dust nodded slightly, feeling guilty for not having given the food sooner.

"Here," he said softly, opening the bag and offering it's contents to Lea.

Inside was a juice box, a cookie, a small sandwhich, and some Apple sauce. Lea looked at the contents, seeming confused. "What's that stuff?" She asked in pure curiosity, looking up into Dust's eyes.

"It's food, you can eat it," Dust responded gently.

"This is food? Wow, I didn't know food could be so colorful! Uh...How much am I allowed to eat?" She asked, gazing at the colorful food display.

Dust smiled slightly.

"As much as you want," he said simply, gazing at Lea fondly.

Lea nodded, slowly picking up the cookie first. She took a small bite, and immediately, her eyes lit up. "Woah! Food can actually taste this GOOD?" She asked, taking another bite.

Dust laughed softly, nodding.

"Yeah, it can," he grinned, glad that Lea seemed happy.

She quickly finished the cookie, and then looked to the juice box, taking a moment to figure out how the straw worked. However, she loved the fruity taste, and her eyes were bright with glee.

Dust smiled, happy for the first time in the year since Horror's death, his eyelights sparkling.

'I'll protect her. I won't let anything hurt her. I won't let her die like Horror did...' he thought, determined but sad at the same time.

Sci and Red watched Dust with Lea, both smiling.

Lea eventually finished the sandwhich and Apple sauce too, smiling. She'd liked the cookie best. Suddenly, without thinking, she hugged Dust. It was only for a moment, before she realized her actions and backed up quickly. "Oh! I'm so sorry! I didn't mean to, I just-sorry..."

Dust shook his head, hesitating for a moment, then pulling the kid into a soft, comforting hug.

"You don't have to apologize," he said softly, smiling slightly. "It's okay."

Lea slowly hugged back again, just smiling softly, small tears edging her eyes.

Dust smiled, rubbing gentle, comforting circles onto Lea's back, holding her close softly, murmuring soft, near silent words of comfort.

Lea then looked up at Dust, "Can we not live here, in this room? Do you have somewhere else we can go. This place, scares me..."

Dust shook his head.

"I don't have other plans, but we won't stay here," he said gently, his gaze soft.

"Especially not when it scares you," he added.

"We can return to me and Red's house, if you want." Sci offered, looking from Dust to Lea. Lea looked up at Dust for an answer.

"Are you sure that's okay..? That would be great and all, but..." he trailed off, but it was obvious that he just didn't want to burden the pair. "I can... work something out, if we're going to be too much trouble..."

"Nonsense, you've stayed with us for a year already, and we've already got your room made up. We'd love to have you both stay!" Red answered, smiling.

Dust smiled faintly, nodding.

"Yeah, yeah you're right, thank you," he said softly, before turning to Lea.

"Sound good?" he queried carefully.

Lea nodded, smiling happily at Dust.

Dust smiled as well, pulling away from the hug gently.

"Thank you," he said quietly, looking to Ref and Sci when he spoke, seeming relieved and happier than he'd been in a long time.  

Sci and Red both smiled, nodding towards the door. It was getting late, and the group should probably go home.

Dust nodded his understanding, his gaze returning to Lea, a soft smile curving his mouth.

"Ready to leave?" he asked.

"Yes daddy, when you are." Lea answered, looking up at Dust in excitement.

Dust smiled softly, taking the smaller's hand gently.

"Let's go then," he said, glancing back towards Red and Sci, his eyes glinting happily.

Sci nodded, opening the door for everyone, and Red gestured Dust and Lea to follow him. "This way."

Dust followed after Red and Sci, holding onto Lea's hand gently, guiding her forward.

Lea followed in a brisk walk, looking out at the walls of the eery-looking hallway. She then pressed closer to Dust, trying to comfort herself. 'Daddy will protect me from the scariness.'

Dust wrapped his arm around Lea's shoulder's gently, drawing the smaller closer.

"It's okay," he murmured, rubbing the child's arm softly. "You're okay."
