Chapter 7. Trying To Save Ben

I'm laying on the grass in our backyard looking upon the stars when I see something I'd never thought I'd see.

A bus on fire.

I run out from the backyard to see it crash into a house.

I see Sawyer running around.

"Dad!" 

He turns and looks at me.

"What the hell is happening?!" I say

"Hayley get away from here!"

I run away like Sawyer told me to do but Jack stops me and asks, "What happened?" 

"Three years, no burning buses you're back here for one day. Go help that guy with the hose" I say and I get to a safe distance. 

This wasn't random. 

It was a distraction.

But for what?

The fire is out. 

Jin pulls up in a van and he has an unconscious Ben with a bullet wound in his arms.

Ever since I finished school, Juliet has been teaching me everything she knows about being a doctor.

Its morning now and we are trying to save Ben.

"More gauze," Juliet tells me, I give her some more.

Juliet says, "If we can't stop the hemorrhaging, we're gonna have to pack the tract."

"Okay," I say

Sawyer walks in and says, "Where's the doctor?"

"The Looking Glass station till Friday," Juliet says

"Hows he doin?'" 

"Not well,  he's bleeding in there somewhere and we can't fix it," I say

Juliet says, "Someone needs to get in there, find the damage that bullet did and fix it"

I look over at Sawyer and say, "He needs a real surgeon" 

He runs out of the room to go get Jack.

Jack said he won't help us try to save Ben.

We have Ben stable for now but there's a good chance he won't make it.  Kate shows up to donate some blood because Ben lost a lot.  

Roger, Bens dad burst through the door.

"What's going on?" He says

"Roger, I asked you to wait outside..." Juliet says

"No what's going on with my kid?"

"Kate is giving us some fresh blood so we can transfuse Ben," I say

"Well, I'm not waiting outside"

"He can stay with me, then you guys could check on Ben, and Roger here could keep me company, make sure I don't pass out," Kate says 

"Okay Roger have a seat," Juliet says

A few minutes later Ben starts to go into hypoxic shock which means he needs more oxygen. 

I kick Roger out because it's too stressful with so many people in here.

We finally get Ben stable again, but we still can't fix it.

Juliet comes up with the idea that maybe The Others can help in some way.

Juliet, Kate, and I put Ben in the back of the van so Kate can take him to The Others.

Juliet and I are in the infirmary cleaning up when Sawyer walks in.

"Where's Ben?" He asks

"Um, Kate has him," I say

"And why the hell does Kate have him?"

Juliet says, "She's taking him to the others, maybe they can fix him."

He takes off to go catch up to Kate.

Juliet and I change out of our scrubs and into our regular clothes. Both of us are pissed at Jack for not helping us save Ben.

Juliet opens the door and we both walk inside.

"Where's Jack?" Juliet asks Hurley and Miles

"Uh, he's in the shower," Miles says

"Is he in trouble?" Hurley says

"I just need to talk to him," Juliet says

Miles, Hurley, and I leave to give Juliet privacy.

Juliet and I are back at the infirmary and Kate walks in.

"Hey," She says

"How'd it go?" I say

"We gave him to them, to the Others"

"Anyone see you?" Juliet asks

"I don't think so."

"Did James help?" I ask

"Yes, thank you guys so much for sending him."

"Of course," Juliet says

Roger walks in and sees Ben is not there.

"Where's Ben?" he asks "Did he..."

"No...no," I say

"Where is he?"

Juliet says, "Roger I'm so sorry. I was gone for ten minutes I don't know."

"What? You said he was dying, how can he be gone?"

"I don't know..."

"What you're telling me he got up and walked out? You're his doctor. You're supposed to watch him."

"I know I know. If we just calm down..."

"Don't tell me to calm down! Somebody came and took my boy?"

"I'm so sorry"

"I'm going to security!"

He stomps away running into the table knocking everything off and doesn't look back once.
