"Dad? Are you up there!" I yell
After meeting with Ms. James the other day, I thought it was time to have a talk with my dad. I couldn't just make this decision without talking to him first.
"Hey Novs. What are you doing here?" My brother Cameron asks hugging me
"Hey Cam. I just, I need to talk to dad" I say impatiently
"Must be pretty important if you're all jittery like that. What's going on?" He chuckles taking a seat at the island
"Well, I may or may not have spoken to record producer the other day" I say shyly
His eyes widen in shock as I give a smile.
"That's huge! What did they say?" He asks jumping up
"They wanna sign me Cam" I say with happy tears in my eyes
He stands from his seat, embracing me in a warm hug. See, this is what I love about Cameron, no matter what we go through, he always treats me the same even before I had gotten sick. Sure, he was scared but we got through it. I'm thankful to have him.
"I'm so proud of you Nova" he giggles
"And why are you proud of your sister?" I hear a voice boom from behind us
We break apart, turning around swiftly. Our dad stands there with a stern look on his face and a suit clad on his form.
"Are you too just gonna stand there or are you gonna tell me?" He booms
I flinch as Cameron clears his throat, moving away to take his seat back at the island.
"Well, dad, I met with a record producer from Capital records and-" I explain before being cut off
"I don't think so, Nova. You should be focused on school, not some crazy dream" he scoffs
My smile falters hearing his words. Cameron notices my frown, stepping in almost immediately.
"Dad, come on. You know she loves singing and she hasn't been able to live a normal life since she was eleven. Let her do this" Cameron pushes
"No Cameron! Until you have kids, you can let them do whatever but she's my child and what I say goes" he barks
"Why can't I do this? I've been confined to this house since I got diagnosed! I've had treatment and now I'm in remission. Why can't I do this, Dad?" I retort
He surprises me by slamming his hands on the counter making both Cameron and I jump.
"Enough Nova! Damn it. Why can't you just listen to me. Stay focused on college and leave that silly dream of yours alone. Don't make me have to say it again" he says with anger laced in his words
"And if I do?" I push
Something seems to flip in his mind as he gets closer to my face, almost nose to nose. Fears rises as his face becomes more red.
"Then I'll consider it as your departure from this family" he yells
I flinch once more with tears in my eyes.
"Dad, you don't mean that" Cameron mumbles
"Of course I do. I said it didn't I?" He smirks
"You would really kick your own daughter out of the family for not doing what you say?" I ask lowly
He shrugs, making himself a drink. He slams the bottle down before downing the alcoholic beverage in his hand.
