[Skylar’s POV]

I ran from my third hour AP US History class to the lunch pavilion. I rushed past my usual spot under the tree to where I saw four boys goofing around at a table.

“Is it ok if I sit with you guys?” I asked tentatively, suddenly scared that they would say no since Beau wasn’t here yet. “Of course,” James said with a welcoming grin. I smiled gratefully before plopping down next to them and pulling out my lunch.

“Sky!” Luke suddenly shouted and I dropped my sandwich from surprise when he shouted my name. “Fuck, Luke!” I snapped, smiling at him to show I was joking. Although, I was kind of sad to see a perfectly good ham and cheese sandwich go to waste.

“If we all went bungee jumping, do you think Daniel would cry?” Luke asked me. Everyone’s eyes focused in on Daniel, who was making a stack of potato chips into a house.

When he heard it got quiet, he looked up at all of us, ruining his concentration and knocking over his chip house. “Shit,” he muttered, looking extremely upset as we all burst out laughing at his expense. “Sky!” Daniel exclaimed, sounding as if he just noticed I was there.

“Daniel!” I said, in the same tone of voice. “It’s a miracle!” He said so loudly, a few people from other tables glanced in our direction. I studied the ground until I felt them return their gazes to their own tables. “What’s a miracle?” I asked quietly, prepared for anything because, it was Daniel. “You’re a girl!” he exclaimed excitedly, looking over my outfit.

I scoffed, “Of course I’m a girl, Daniel, what were you expecting?”  “Well last time we saw you, you were wearing Beau’s clothes,” Daniel reminded me, making me blush slightly at the memory. “Right,” I responded quietly.

“When James and I first got there, we thought Beau had banged you,” Daniel said with a laugh, high-fiving James. I was beyond mortified and now a deep shade of red that would put tomatoes to shame.

“Daniel!” Beau barked from behind me, sounding somewhat angry, “Shut your fat mouth, would you,” he stated with a smack on Daniel’s head. Daniel whimpered and looked like he was going to cry so he curled up next to Jai’s side.

I knew he was joking though, because I could hear the giggles coming from underneath Jai’s arm as Jai proceeded to poke and tickle Daniel.

“Sorry for them,” Beau said as he sat down next to me, gesturing to his friends and brothers. Even though I had spent most of Saturday with Beau, I still couldn’t believe I was on speaking terms with him.

Hell, I still couldn’t believe Beau Brooks knew I existed, let alone wanted to spend time with me. I stared openly at him for a moment until he gave me a weird look, which snapped me right out of my stare session.

“They’re fine,” I said with a giggle when Luke was dared to stick a carrot in ketchup and mustard and eat it. Apparently he liked it, because he dipped more carrots into the condiment concoction and ate the combination.

“How has your day been so far?” Beau asked as he unwrapped his sandwich. “It’s been fine,” I said in a sort of trance as I stared at his ham and cheese sandwich. My sandwich, which was currently on the ground, was all I had to eat for lunch and I was starving.

Beau caught me staring at his sandwich, “Do you want some?” he asked me, offering half his sandwich. “I couldn’t,” I said, returning my gaze to my hands, which were folded in my lap. “I insist,” he said, pulling a napkin out of his brown paper lunch bag and putting it in front of me.

He put half his sandwich on it, which I picked up gratefully and bit into. “Thank you,” I said, my voice muffled because it was full of food.

I scarfed the enormous sandwich down in about four bites, savoring the sweet ham taste in my mouth as I finished it off.

Beau stared at me with wide eyes, “Please tell me your parents don’t starve you,” Beau said, half-jokingly.

“No,” I giggled, rolling my eyes at him, “I wasn’t feeling very hungry this morning so I only packed a sandwich and Luke startled me and I dropped it on the ground and I guess I was more hungry than I thought I would be,” I sighed, ending my speech about my eating habits, sure I just bored Beau to death. Instead he leaned over me and shouted down the length of the table, “Oi! Shitface!” I laughed when Luke actually responded to the insult, “Yeah?” he asked, leaning over James to see Beau properly.

“Give Sky your chips. You owe her,” Luke rolled his eyes but tossed me his chips.

“Beau, it’s fine,” I said, trying to hand Luke his chips back, but Luke wouldn’t take them, “Thanks, Luke,” I said with a smile as I broke open the bag of barbeque chips. Mmm, my favorite.

When the bell rang, signaling the end of lunch, I quickly said goodbye to the boys and took off across the lawn to my next class which took me five minutes to get to walking.

Seeing as I only had three minutes of passing time, I decided that sprinting and getting to class on time was worth all the odd stares I received from my fellow peers for running to class.

I got to class and sat down just as the bell rang, out of breath and flushed. But I couldn’t stop a smile from spreading across my face. I just had the best, most dysfunctional, lunch ever.

And I loved every minute of it.

[Beau’s POV]

Skylar gave us a hurried goodbye before turning to sprint across the lawn to her next class, bumping into various people and oblivious to some of the dirty looks she received from those people which made my lips twitch up into a small smile at her klutziness.

“Bro,” Luke said, startling me from my gaze, “You have less than three weeks to get her to give it to you,” he reminded me, making my good mood go sour from the reminder.

“Thanks for reminding me,” I said sarcastically. “I just want to win,” Luke said, a devilish grin spreading across his face.

“Yeah?” I responded, “What’ll happen if you do win?” “I’ll come up with something good,” Luke said and with the glint in his eyes, I couldn’t deny that he would. I needed to win.
