[Skylar’s POV]

I gathered all my school books and shoved them into my backpack. Slinging the plain black bag over my shoulder, I made my way to the kitchen.

“Good morning, mom,” I said kissing my mother on the cheek. She smiled as she scrambled some eggs on the stovetop. “I left your lunch on the counter, have a good day honey!” I grabbed the brown paper bag before walking out the door to my red convertible Mustang.

I got in the car and honked twice for my brother, Sam, he was always running late. “Sam!” I yelled. Sam was my twin brother and was very popular.

He spent more time on his hair than I did on my whole morning routine. Sam finally came out of the house with his soccer bag in hand.

He tossed his bag in the back and climbed in next to me. “Sorry I was running late, sis. I couldn’t find my other knee pad!” He exclaimed as he buckled in. “Its fine,” I said as I sped out of the driveway and hurried to school. I loved driving to school with my brother.

Even though he is more popular than I am at school, we are still very close. I laughed at something Sam said as I pulled into the school parking lot, looking for a spot.

Because of Sam, I can get a great parking spot. “Bye, Sam,” I said as we got out of the car, “Bye Sky, I’ll see you at home!” And with that, he walked off to his group of friends.

I smiled and adjusted my beanie before grabbing my backpack and making my way into the school. The bell rang just as I sat down in my first class. I let out a breath, made it just in time.

-------Lunch-------

I was sitting under my favorite tree, reading Catcher in the Rye for the billionth time and eating my sandwich. I’m not going to lie, I am a loner and I hated it.

Sam always tried to get me to be friends with some of the people in his group but I can tell the only reason they tolerate me is to stay in Sam’s good graces.

People aren’t exactly mean to me, but none of them are kind either. It’s like when you see a bee if you ignore the bee, hopefully it’ll ignore you and won’t sting you.

When I ignore people, they ignore me. There, problem solved. While I was sitting under the tree, mesmerized by Holden Caulfield’s bizarre view of the world, I heard a familiar voice.

Looking up, I spotted the one boy I’ve had a crush on since the third grade. Beau Brooks, he was the soccer captain, the hottest guy in school, and the golden boy. Also, he’s my brother’s biggest rival.

*FLASHBACK*

I was playing on the monkey bars and fell off and broke my arm. While we were waiting for my mom to come take me to the hospital, Beau sat by me and tried to make me feel better. I think he forgot it ever happened, that I even exist, but I will always remember that moment because, for one day, it actually felt like I had a friend. Ever since then, I’ve had a massive crush on him.

*END OF FLASHBACK*

I tore my gaze from Beau, trying not to stare creepily at him, and focused again on my book. If only he would notice me…
