[Skylar’s POV]
Beau sat back down at our table while I was still on the phone with my mom. “Mom, I left you a note in the kitchen, will you please just calm down?” I asked her, trying to make myself heard above her lecturing.“Well who are you having coffee with? Hm? Is it one of those boys I’ve never met? How do I know if they’re good boys? What if they’re troublesome boys? What if they, god forbid, try and harass you in any way? I will not let my only daughter strut around town with good for nothing boys!” My mom said sharply into the phone, breathing heavily from being so upset.
"Mom!” I shouted, trying to calm her down, “I’m here with Beau, okay? We’re just at Starbucks. Would you please calm down now? Jesus!” I said into the phone, frustrated. I looked over at Beau who looked as if he was going to start laughing.
I shot him a dirty look as I heard my mom rant about how she doesn’t know anything about this ‘Beau’.
I covered up the speaker with my hand and leaned in close to Beau, “Would you please come to dinner tonight so my mom can meet you and we can hang out without her calling the National Guard on us?” I asked him hurriedly, hoping he would say yes.
“Yeah, sure,” he said with a smile before tipping the rest of his coffee into his mouth.
“Mom, Mom,” I had to say a few times to get her attention, “Beau is coming over for dinner tonight so you can meet him, okay? Okay. I’ll see you when I get home, love you, byyyye,” I said hurriedly, hanging up without hearing my mom’s response.
“I should probably get home and show my mom that I am still alive,” I said, not wanting to end this Starbucks run with Beau, but knowing that if I didn’t get home soon, my mom would blow a gasket. “That’s cool, I’ll drive you home,” Beau said.
We threw away our drinks and walked out of Starbucks. “Oh! Beau, I have something for you,” I said before leaning around the passenger seat to reach something in the backseat. I pulled out the socks I had grabbed from the night before.
I thrust them proudly into Beau’s lap, “Here,” I said, laughing when I saw his expression of disbelief. “Whose are these?” Beau asked, gingerly picking them up and examining them.
“They’re your first pair of socks for your new sock collection! These are from the party last night,” I said, as if it explained everything.
“Okay, that’s cool, but whose are these?” Beau asked again, looking even more freaked out, “You didn’t like, shag a guy or something did you? Because I’m honored that you would do that for me, but I don’t really want your, um…sex socks.”
I burst out laughing, “No! I didn’t ‘shag a guy’,” I said, making air quotes with my fingers, “I asked some random drunk guy if I could have his socks and he said yes.” Beau stared at me for a second, “So you don’t know whose these are?” he asked again.
“No Beau, I don’t! I was just thinking of you and got you some socks. God, I’m sorry I did it. It won’t happen again,” I said, crossing my arms and staring out the window. I was honestly a little pissed off. I mean I went up to some random guy and humiliated myself by asking for his socks and Beau doesn’t even thank me? Asshole.
Suddenly Beau burst out laughing and dragged me into a hug, “Thanks, Skylar. I love them,” he whispered in my ear, giving me shivers down my back.
I smiled into his shoulder and gave him a squeeze back. I looked down at my lap when he let go of me so he wouldn’t see how red I was in the face.
“We should get you home now, yeah?” Beau asked, starting up the van. “Yeah,” I said quietly, still blushing from the hug. The things that boy could do to me.
