[Skylar’s POV]
I walked as confidently into Ms. Cosgrove’s room as I could. I took a deep breath and quietly closed the door. She looked up from her grading when she heard the door shut. She looked back down at her papers, “If you’re here to ask for me to let you out of your detention sentence, you can walk your little body right back out that door,” she said as she wrote something down with a pen.
I gulped and ventured further into the classroom, pulling a chair up across from her desk so I could face her while I talked to her, “Ms. Cosgrove,” I said, trying to get her attention.
I ran my sweaty hands up and down my jeans, trying to ignore my nervousness about being so direct and I tried to just ignore all my thoughts and fears and just do what I came here to do, “I am not here to try and get myself out of detention.
I’m here to get Beau out of detention,” I stated, my voice a little shaky. This caught her attention. She raised her head and took off her glasses and set them down on her desk, “Continue,” she said, before folding her hands together on top of her desk and pursed her lips.
I gulped nervously and started shaking my knee, “You see, Beau doesn’t really have the best grades right now and the only way he thinks colleges will pay attention to him is if he makes soccer captain this year.
If he misses one practice, for detention especially, his coach won’t consider him for the position anymore.
Which is why,” I continued with more confidence, “I would like to serve two detentions. I will serve one after school today and tomorrow afternoon. Is that ok?” I asked, praying that she would say yes.
She sighed and looked thoughtfully at me for a second before saying, “Miss Harper, in all of my sixteen years of teaching, I have never had a student voluntarily take another student’s position in detention; which is why I will allow Beau to skip detention this time.
You however, will only have to serve detention for tonight. I’m letting this one slide because you seem like a truthful and caring person.
And, it is nice to be reminded what it is like to be young and in love,” she said flashing me a rare smile.
I stared at her confused for a second, “Wait, Beau and I? In love?” I spluttered out, aghast. When she nodded again, I tried to set her on the right track, “Ms. Cosgrove, Beau and I are just friends. But thank you for the detentions. It really means a lot to me and it will mean a lot to Beau,” I said graciously.
She smiled at me again before saying, “Don’t tell the other students about me letting this one slide.
I wouldn’t want to start looking weak, now would I?” I laughed before responding with a “no ma’am.” I shook hands with her and stood, heading towards the door to get out of this classroom, “And Miss Harrison?” Ms. Cosgrove called, finally getting my name right and making me turn around again, “Please try to participate more in class,” she said giving me a thin lipped smile.
I colored slightly before turning to hurry out of the room.
I finally found Beau talking to some of the guys on his soccer team in the courtyard after school, “BEAU!” I shrieked, launching myself at him and clinging onto his back like a baby koala.
He stumbled slightly with the unexpected weight.
I jumped down and dragged Beau by the hand a few feet away from his friends, who were staring at us curiously, “I got you out of detention,” I squealed excitedly, jumping up and down. He stared at me for a second before almost whispering, “You did what?” “I got you out of detention,” I staged whispered in reply.
