[Skylar’s POV]
“Are you okay?” a voice asked from behind me. I jumped in surprise and turned to see Beau looking at me with worried eyes.“Yes,” I said, hoping he wouldn’t hear my voice tremor. “No, you’re not,” Beau said, pulling me into a hug. I stood, not touching him for a moment before everything hit me and I burst into tears.
I’m never going to be good enough for anyone. I wasn’t good enough for Max, I wasn’t good enough for my parents, and I most defiantly wasn’t good enough for Beau if he was willing to accept a dare about me.
“Skylar, what’s wrong?” Beau asked, concerned. “I’m just never going to be good enough for anyone,” I said, pushing my face into his shoulder, soaking his shirt with my tears and my – ew – snot.
“Skylar, I know what I did to you was wrong, it was horrible, and you’ll probably never forgive me for it, but you’ve just got to know that those days I spent with you were the best days of my life. You changed me for the better and I’ll never be able to forget you,” Beau said.
One look in his eyes told me that he was telling the truth. My heart melted a little but I still wasn’t forgiving him.
“Thanks, Beau, but it doesn’t make what you or what Max did hurt any less,” I admitted, backing away from him and wiping my face. Ew, I was disgusting.
I wrapped my arms around my body, still sniffling slightly. “Skylar,” Beau suddenly asked, sounding like he was forcing himself to stay calm, “How far did you guys go?” “Um,” I said, hesitating, not meeting Beau’s eyes.
“Skylar,” Beau said in a softer tone, stepping forwards and gripping my shoulder, “How far did you guys go?” he asked again. “We, he, second base,” I stuttered out and closed my eyes, not wanting to see Beau’s reaction.
[Beau’s POV]
Second base; second base?! I clenched my fists open and closed, trying to keep calm. I know, I know, second base, big deal; but seeing Skylar, standing there, looking so innocent, and knowing that Max had taken advantage of her when he was with another girl made me so angry.Suddenly, Max stepped out of the café, soaking wet, and ran over to Skylar, “Sky, I’m so sorry,” he burst out, running over to her and putting his hand on her shoulder, “I never meant to hurt you, I just liked you a lot and didn’t know how to end it with Jane. Sky,” he said grabbing her chin and making her look him in the eyes, “I think I’m in love with you,” he admitted.
Skylar inhaled deeply, uncertainty filling her eyes. My jaw clenched and I walked forwards, grabbing Max’s shoulder and spun him around to face me, “Who do you think you are, messing with her feelings?” I demanded, gripping his shirt in my fist and pulling him close to my face. “I’m just telling the truth, I really do love her,” Max said, holding his hands up in surrender.
“Skylar,” I said, turning towards her, “Do you love him?” I asked her, praying to God she would say no. She hesitated for a moment, tears running down her beautiful face and her lip was pulled in between her teeth.
All I wanted to do was run over and pull that lip in between my own teeth but I knew I couldn’t because I had ruined everything; I had messed everything up.
“No,” she finally said quietly. “You hear that?” I asked Max angrily, shoving him away from me,
“She doesn’t love you. Why don’t you leave her alone and never talk to her again,” I suggested, fixing him with a glare.
He started to back away, his eyes flitting between my angry stance and Skylar’s broken looking face and his eyes lit up mischievously.
Uh-oh. He strode over to me, getting right in my face, “You like her, don’t you Beau?” He asked me in a mocking tone, “But she doesn’t like you back, does she? She just thinks of you as a friend,” he stated.
I tried not to let him see how much his words were affecting me but I think he could tell. “You and me, we’re in the same boat, aren’t we?” Max asked me, gesturing to Skylar, “She doesn’t love me, she doesn’t like you, I think there’s a reason here, don’t you?” he asked me.
I nodded, “Yeah, because you were an asshole who broke her heart and her trust,” I explained, not adding on that I had done the exact same thing.
“No,” Max challenged, turning towards Skylar, “it’s because she’s a frigid tease who’s never going to give it up, isn’t that right Beau?” That was it. That was when I lost it.

Beau threw the first punch.
