**Chapter 21**
Liam and I were sitting on his blanket at The Viewpoint, staring out at the small town. The light, early fall breeze was blowing, taking some of the colorful, fallen leaves down the steep hill. I was staring down at the town, thinking about my mom again. I let out a deep sigh and closed my eyes, shaking my head. Liam was sitting close to me and I knew he was looking at me. I was waiting for him to ask a question.
He let out a deep sigh next to me, "Do you want to talk about it now? You don't have to if you don't want to." he said, gently.
I breathed out a long breath and opened my eyes again, "I got grounded this morning." I said blankly, continuing to look out at the town.
I heard him quietly snicker beside me, "You're eighteen and you still get grounded?" he asked, sounding amused.
I rolled my eyes, "Yup, and it was for something stupid too." I sighed.
"What did you do?" he questioned.
I looked over at him. He was patiently awaiting an answer from me, "Do you remember when we were in the coffee shoppe and I was telling you about my get together with Zayn, Analeigh, and Harry?" I asked.
Liam's facial expression grew grim, and I was afraid that I upset him by bringing that subject back up again. He pressed his lips together before licking the dryness away, "I do remember that, yes." he said with a nod.
"Well, that day, we all decided to drink a little, and because Niall got hurt, they had to test his blood. Long story short, my mom found out we were drinking and grounded me."
Liam nodded, "And you thought skipping class to hang out with me was going to make it better?" he asked.
I shrugged, "I just wanted to get away from everyone if only for a few hours. And besides, you're the only one I want to hang out with right now."
Liam smiled, "Right back at you." he said and I couldn't help but smile. Liam looked at me, his brown eyes sparkling with happiness.
"You're really happy right now. I've never seen you this happy before." I commented, admiring his beautiful smile.
"Ah, you've never seen me like this. You've only seen the rough outer shell." he said jokingly. He looked out at the small town as I still stared up at him. I watched as his big grin was replaced with a small smile, "I haven't been like this in a while because I haven't had someone like you." he admitted.
"What do you mean someone like me? I asked, confused.
"A friend." he stated simply.
I furrowed my eyebrows in confusion, "You don't have any friends?" I asked.
Liam shook his head, "The last friend I had stabbed me in the back, so after that, I shut people out. That is, until I met you. You came along and broke down my walls like it was nothing, but I'm not complaining because I'm glad you did." he said with a smile.
I looked away from him to hide my blushing face. When I looked back at him, he was still smiling, but he was now looking back out at the town, "Can I ask what your friend did to you?" I asked. My eyes searched his face and landed on the fading scar on his left cheekbone. Maybe his friend gave him that scar.
He shook his head, "I really don't want to talk about that. Now isn't a good time or place to talk about that."
I nodded, "It's okay. I understand." I said. I sighed and laid back on the blanket, looking up at the thick clouds slowly passing by. I closed my eyes and listened to the wind as it blew through the leaves and the grass, and how the birds sang their beautiful songs.
