"I can't, Aunt Francine. I won't even get selected."
Aggravation clear in Aunt Francine's eye, she takes a breath and re-reads the letter.
"Dammit, Delilah Esmerelda Primar! If you don't at least try-"
I cut her off mid-sentence, "Don't swear at me." It was like wave of relaxation hit her...
"You know why I want you to do this right?"
I look up from her springy bed, "why?"
"So you can finally show up the bitch you call a sister. And because...your mom would've wanted it."
They was it. I felt all the negative reasons break away, and suddenly her beautiful memory flashed back.
"You have your moms beauty, and my brothers craziness- a man would be stupid not to take you in."
I take a huge breath laying myself back onto the bed.
"Mom was beyond pretty- I don't have that trait."
Aunt Francine stands to leave the room,
"Your mom, was yes beautiful woman by appearance, but she had a caring heat...something that's locked right there," her nimble pale hands find her heart.
"...and yes, you do have her appearance. You have something rare, and outstanding...natural beauty."
And with that she walks out of the room leaving me alone.
I had a mental list of pros and cons soaring threw my head later that night before dinner.
What if I don't get chosen- that'll just make me lose confidence.
But if I at least turn in a form that's still a chance-
"Hey, you!"
I turn my head to Genevieve's room, where she's patting on make up.
"Come here."
Of course I have a major right to be hesitant, but I slowly enter the exotic purple colored room. She comes about a foot in front of me, and says "So are you entering?"
I stand in front of the door frame, my right hand finding my other arm squeezing it with anxiety; she's acting weird, which is nothing unusual but she's acting...nice?
Then moment later she slams her manicured hand beside my head onto the wall, that didn't last long.
"Well don't think about it. You know you don't have a chance. All bobble headed and four eyed."
I feel anger rise in my but I think it's best not to mess up her face before her next photoshoot.
"Hey girls!" My dad pops out of his door frame just in time.
"So were y'all just discussing the selection?"
He rolls up his sleeves to his work shirt, ready to eat.
"Yea! I'm so excited!"
Did I also mention she was an actress?
"What about you, Del? You going to fill out the form?"
I look at Genevieve whose half-make up'd face gives me a death glare, but I can't help but smirk.
"Yeah, I was hoping after supper you can help me fill it out!"
I say a tone of excitement to my voice. Hey, I could be an actor too!
"Great, what will y'all wear tomorrow for the pictures at the office? That's where their turning in the forms, but oddly you have to take a photo but that's fine with me!"
My face turns to stone...we have to take pictures?
"Well dad, I don't have anything fancy-"
And he cuts me off,
"I got a great idea! Gen, you got something she can wear, am I correct?"
A huge smirk appears across my face as I turn to Genevieve,
"Yea...'Gen.'"
She looks angry at herself for a second and then with a fake smile she agrees.
"Thanks Gen, your the best!"
I think it's cute how dads known me my whole life and still don't know when I'm sarcastic.
So now I guess I'm entering the selection, and that whole pro/cons list is gone; I'm sort of a talking 3 year old: When you tell me not to do something, I'm going to do it, so thanks Genevieve for the bright idea.
