After the news Rick had sprinted on me I felt like everything I had been dodging was aiming for me with a scope at once.
I just needed to breathe and being surrounded by my mother and rick was not ideal.
I already knew they were aiming for me to drown is this damn world pool, so I grabbed power and took him on a drive just to clear my head.
"Where are we going?" Power asked, as we turned onto the high ͏w͏a͏y 15.
"Just to spend sometime, you don't want to have quality time with your mommy."
Power set back into his seat with a smirk as I glimpsed over at him.
"What is that corny ...you too cool?" Chuckled.
"No you're my mom, you look pretty by the way." Power added making my heart sink and me blush.
My hair wasn't the least bit combed just lying on my shoulders and I wore a olive green v neck and jeans. Moments like this is what kept me pushing as a mother. But now I had to analyze and face the truths before me.
I couldn't allow my son to wonder for the rest of his life where his father was.
"You are too sweet. We're actually going to get muffins and omelette's." I uttered, still smiling at my god giving son.
His name still stood to be true, this little man had been my power all along.
As we finally made it to the small diner I recall my dad taking me to when I was younger, the overwhelming feeling of nostalgia invited itself in.
"Sally's Diner" was a small building right off of the busiest street in North Carolina, similar to a hole in the wall.
I had been there many times before just having Daddy daughter dates with my dad and talking about everything that my little mind could think of.
It's a wonder I ended up the way I did in all Of this turmoil.
Ms.Sally was an older lady about 70 now Caucasian and ran this business all by herself since her daughter died, and the first face I saw was Ms.Sally.
"Oh my goodness, the devil must be drowning in his hell. How are you my dear girl Madison!" She squealed moving as fast as her age would allow.
She was 5'2 and just barely 100 lbs but she had the strength of a bear as she grappled me in her arms.
I couldn't do a thing but smile from ear to ear.
As we parted I answered, "I'm wonderful." In a solemn tone.
"Oh that's beautiful, and just who might this young baby be?"
I glimpsed down at my power and answered proudly. "My son, this is my baby boy Power."
Ms.Sally's eyes grew wide as a tunnel as she knelt down reaching out for his palms and taking him in for a hug.
"Hello ma'am." Power uttered bashfully.
"And he has manners, wow. Madison I'm shocked, you too come along I'm just finishing up my muffins and omelettes can I get you anything special?" Ms.Sally asked Power.
He nodded no staring up at me to take the attention away from him.
"No thank you ms.Sally the regular is perfectly fine. We'll take a seat over here." I replied as she smiled taking her towel from her apron and nodding.
As we sat down I couldn't control the words that exited my mouth.
"Power would you..." I paused in my sentence scooting my chair up to the small wooden table, rephrasing. "Could you ever love someone that hurt mommy?"
Power looked out the window then drew his attention back to me
"Nope. Why would I ?" Would you? He replied.
"Well, it ... it was just a question." I sighed realizing this conversation was a lot harder to have than I expected.
"Who hurt you Mama?"
"No one sweet heart, I was just storytelling. Listen, Power I was thinking about letting you meet your grandpa."
Powers face switched to one of confusion before showing me those little adorable teeth.
"Mama I already know grandpa." He laughed shaking his head.
A smile of nervousness surfaced as my facial expression. " no sweetie, I mean. I want to know how you would feel about meeting your fathers Daddy, in which is your grandpa."
"Wait, huh?" He replied puzzled.
"Your dads father baby... how would you."
"You said my dads father , so does that mean I get to meet my dad?"
I glimpsed our the window watching the cars outside come to a halt at the yellow light on the street trying to gather my words.
"No hun, you wouldn't exactly meet him... yet."
"—yet? But I'll be able to meet him?"
"Not exactly, would you like to meet him?"
"I don't know, I guess yes. All my other friends have dads I only have a mom."
"Don't hurt my feelings power." I stuttered, with this grim expression of embarrassment and fear of where this conversation was going.
"Mamaaaa, so I will meet my grandpa and then soon my dad?"
" maybe power, maybe, you really want to do that?"
"Yea I mean I guess."
" well let's really think about this, this is pretty big power... and besides I have more to tell you."
"More like what?"
"The reason we'll be meeting him."
"Why?"
"Your grandfather... he doesn't have much longer to be here with us."
"Like he's leaving or dying?"
I inhaled a deep breath, making eye contact with my son. "Dying, and he really wants to see you."
I could tell Power was thinking because he paused for a great while before finding his words.
"Is he the person that hurt you?"
"No, no baby he isn't the one."
"So I can meet him before he dies?"
"It's up to you baby, he is your grandfather and I wanted to give you the choice, so.... what'll you say?"
Power shrugged skinning his mouth up briefly, before answering, "yea I think it's cool, just sad. So he'll be in heaven after I see him?"
I nodded taking this moment in, "yes".
