CHAPTER 7

"Gran, that's exactly what I'm saying," Brad responded. "You may be on the right track about Controller, if this incident at school is a sign of what's coming."

Evie pushed the "enlarge" on the tele-screen, "Gran, don't pay any attention to Brad, he's just putting you on." She turned her words to her brother, "Brad why do you have to encourage her? She gets all worked up when you tell her stuff like that."

"Evie, she's hip to all this, not some old lady out of the last century. Get with it. She may be more in tune than we are and who knows, she may be right."

"Brad stop! I can't hear her and you at the same time."

"Oh, okay. I'm done anyway! Gotta go Gran...I love you, bye. Brad got up and watched as his sister put on her privacy ear phones, then he was gone.

Evie made an annoyed gesture; reset the screen for normal viewing and returned to her conversation, "Gran, now what were you saying...."

Her maternal grandmother, Veronica Lakeland, was really a very progressive woman. Raised in a male dominated household, Veronica believed in herself and her abilities and never let age or her sex deter her. She taught her daughter Vivian the same principles and was very proud of her achievements. Evie learned a lot from her grandmother too but it was her physical appearance that carried the most weight in Evie's eyes. Evie had seen incredibly beautiful pictures of her as a young woman but believed her Grandma was even more beautiful today; tall and thin, she was the picture of grace and charm. Her strawberry blonde hair, which looked natural, hung straight down just below her shoulders and her blue eyes were always embellished by the latest make-up.

Veronica was already a successful model when she met and married Evie's grandfather; Robert Lakeland. He was an award-winning photographer, and, up until his untimely death, two years ago, he had photographed some of the world's most beautiful and famous people. Grandma didn't look her age or act it and Evie especially admired how, now that she was alone, she was starting a whole new career as the International Spokesperson for Glamour Makeup.

Evie loved to spend time looking at all her photographs, especially those taken by her grandfather. She was inspired by the great beauty her grandparents created together and had to admit that thinking spurred her hopes to someday try her hand at modeling. Beyond that, when she allowed herself to dream, she really wanted to become a fashion designer. Evie knew it was a very competitive field and one in which she had no idea if she would be good enough to even be considered. All her education so far was toward a career in science, which she had an aptitude for but not a desire.

Evie heard her Grandmother say something about army invasions and started to question her grandmother about facts. Although Gran was a very intelligent woman, she had one major quirk, she was a sci-fi junkie. She believed all the "believe it or not's" and even invented a few herself. "Evie, I know you think I sometimes act like a crazy old lady, whether I'm going out to clubs dancing, protesting at marches or going from one date to the next," she sighed and continued, "you know I'll never find anyone like your grandfather but I really enjoy life. I work very hard and I play just as hard and live life to what I believe is the fullest. Part of that is believing in what most people see as the unbelievable. But I suppose if you were to ask a man from the early 1900's about computers and hovers and the like...you'd be considered crazy too! You are a very logical and proper young woman, just like your mom but sometimes I wish you would break out a bit more...Loosen up my sweet girl and start to see beyond the science of things!"
