Brad came bounding down the stairs. "Sorry Mom gotta go -- really late."

"Wait, Brad! You haven't had any breakfast and I wanted to ask you if you heard your father leave this morning?"

"No Mom, sorry, I didn't. No time to eat. I'll catch something after my first class."

"Wait for me," Evie yelled grabbing her coat and racing after him, "remember I need a ride."

"Oh right! Car trouble, sorry I forgot. Let's get going, I'm really late."

They both kissed their mother and raced out the front door. "Have a good day," she called after them and closed the door.

Vivian went into the kitchen to get her breakfast and morning coffee. She wasn't used to having a half cup but when she discovered she was pregnant it seemed the best thing to do. She prepared her food and then sat down. She tried to limit her thoughts until she could savor them over her coffee.

Vivian wished the twins could've been able to stay and talk. Something was troubling her this morning and Martin's leaving early just seemed to make it more so. Vivian looked up at the holographic timer on the far kitchen wall; only 7:30. So he must have left a little early. Concentrating on good thoughts she decided, he probably went in early to clean up our work before he talks to Donatez. I'm sure he'll call later, so just relax!

On the way to school Brad couldn't stop thinking about Patti. They had spent hours in cyberspace last night and it was more intense than ever before. This was the first time they had gone totally virtual. He never would have believed how arousing it could be. The kissing became very intense and he was really getting off. He started to tingle now just thinking about it now. Brad had heard from friends about virtual sex in chat rooms but had never tried it. He looked over at Evie. What would his sister think about his kinky night's adventure? On second thought, he reckoned, My twin would probably tell me how nuts I am...and she'd probably be right! After all what do I know about Patti?

Brad realized he didn't even know her last name, or if Patti was even her real name, or just a screen name. But the one thing he did know was, he couldn't wait for the day to be over so he could go back on-line and be with her. He was definitely hooked!

Evie watched Brad's expressions as he drove. Something was different this morning and she couldn't pin it down but she was too tired to inquire. She had been on the "fast com" until three that morning. She spent a great deal of time h-mailing and setting up her rendezvous with her crowd at Venice Beach. The scenario was fun but she'd wished she was actually there. The biggest regret was her boyfriend Eddy wasn't there last night. She hadn't been able to reach him, all night. But, that was nothing new. Since she moved to Island Falls they had grown apart. He claimed to still love her but lately she heard from him less and less. She'd checked again this morning but still hadn't gotten an h-mail from him. She knew he'd turn up sooner or later. It just really bothered her because he never offered any explanation or excuse when he wasn't available. Why couldn't things be the way they used to be? If only she were there instead of here in Island Falls, in the rain and snow; alone. Evie never told anyone how she felt about Island falls because she figured it was obvious. The fact that she did so well in school, made her personal feelings irrelevant and she just decided no one really noticed her melancholy. Even Brad was oblivious to her real feelings. He'd made the adjustment from west to east the minute he saw the snow bunnies skiing down the slopes. Brad could probably be happy anywhere as long as there were sexy girls.

Evie closed her eyes to shut out the glaring sun that had finally breached the rain clouds reminding her of how much she missed California. Tears rolled down her face and she turned away so Brad wouldn't see.
