CHAPTER 35

Martin gave the twins protective coverings to put on and then they followed him to the tented area that had been set up as a life size incubator. Standing inside the tent entrance, so as not to startle the figure lying there, they could not believe this full-size figure whose features mirrored their own. Even though they were somewhat prepared, Brad and Evie were unsettled by the sight of this new being. Seeing the shock on their faces, Martin went over to monitor the oxygen flow and after a few minutes suggested, "Enough for now, you'll have plenty of time to digest this after you both have fully recovered."

"But Dad, what if...?" Brad hesitated "What if, he's not fully functional. What do we do then?"

"From what I'm seeing on the monitors Brad, that doesn't seem to be a problem. All the preliminary data, physical and mental evaluations, all indicate he's perfectly healthy. So, let's put that out of our minds and concentrate on your recoveries. Oh, and by the way, I hope it goes without saying again, everything that's happened will stay within the confines of this house. Understand?"

They both nodded in agreement, especially realizing, if word of this got out, not only would their parents be in jeopardy but they could go to jail."

The twins left the tented area, removed the protective clothing and said their goodnights. Martin escorted them to their rooms and gave them one more cursory examination. He reassured them that the results were better than he could have foreseen.

He then returned to the lab. "My prescription is the same for you, my lady," he told Vivian. "So, let's get you to bed, too."

"Martin wait, I can't possibly sleep, right now. I want to stay a little while longer and monitor our new child."

"Please Viv. You've had a lot of excitement for one day. You and our new child and our unborn baby all need some rest. You've been through a hell-of-an ordeal, so please, no argument!"

Vivian reluctantly agreed. She hadn't realized the toll this was taking until she started up the stairs and was filled with pangs of exhaustion.

When they reached the landing, Vivian hesitated and turned back toward the lab, "He'll need a mother's care during the night. He'll be alone and frightened. Martin, please, I need to go back and stay with him."

With a slight chuckle, Martin turned her back toward the next set of stairs leading up to the bedroom, "Spoken like a true mother but I promise you I can handle being both father and mother, at least for one night... and if I'm not capable, old mother Rosie is going to keep me in line."

They both laughed. "All right Martin. I'll go but promise first, if anything happens you will come and get me."

"I promise."
