CHAPTER 36
With all the excitement of the last twenty-four hours Brad couldn't get to sleep. Instead he checked into cyber-space and hoped to link up with Patti. They hadn't arranged to meet, so he started to search some of the chat rooms.
After about an hour of frustrated searching Brad had to resign himself to simply sending her an h-mail. Exhausted from the day, he felt he really needed to be with her but he couldn't keep his eyes open any longer. Brad finally shut the computer down for the night and decided it was probably better that they didn't connect. Patti was becoming like a fix, one that he had to have.
At that same moment, Evie was lying in bed, torn between her thoughts that kept bouncing between Eddy and everything they shared in California and the new guy she had met in Island Falls who fixed her car.
Oh, Mr. "555 378-8888," she thought, Why are you only a number in my C-TEL? What's your name? Do you have a girlfriend? Did you even notice me at all? Oh, Evie, why are you even thinking about this guy? You have a boyfriend! She started arguing with herself. Yeah, a boyfriend. He's thousands of miles away and I haven't seen him for real for so long and I can't even reach him. Yeah, a lot of good having a boyfriend does me.
She finally decided this bantering in her mind was doing her no good. She grabbed a modeling book and read herself to sleep.
By daybreak things were still status-quo. Martin had caught some shut eye in the lab, on an off and finally decided to get up. He signaled the start of much needed coffee while he checked the tent and the new child's stats.
Rosie proudly announced, "All is well! No changes observed, except a certain doctor finally giving in and closing his eyes for some human needed rest! You can leave the lab and I will continue the vigil!"
He smiled and then read the most recent reports while downing two cups of coffee. Martin instructed Rosie to continue the good work and without waiting for the sarcastic response he knew was coming, he went upstairs to the kitchen.
The smell of the morning toast Martin started preparing seemed to alert the rest of the household.
"How's our new son?" Vivian beamed a smile and then kissed him.
"He's fine? How about you? You're looking wonderfully rested this morning."
Martin noticed she was dressed in a beautiful outfit that seemed to fit her upbeat mood. "I should've guessed what your first question would be.... That's okay Viv! I knew your first questions would not be, Martin, did you get any sleep... Martin, how do you feel...?"
They both laughed. "He's progressing exceptionally well." Martin helped his wife into her chair. "And you seem to be feeling as good as you look!"
"Well Martin, I do believe that a new son and no sleep have made you very observant and very romantic..."
And as inopportune moments go, the twins came barreling down the stairs for breakfast. Brad and Evie each grabbed a glass of orange juice as they came into the kitchen.
Martin updated them on all the news while they got their breakfast. He informed the twins that he and their mother agreed they were well enough to attend their classes, as long as they came right home, afterwards.
Their mother added, "We need the world to see everything we do as normal for this family."
Brad and Evie felt more like kindergarteners than college students but they knew better than to argue.
Martin also knew the scientific world needed to see him beginning to work on the neutralization of Controller.
After breakfast Martin decided to go to the Cottage to begin running some trial experiments regarding Controller and to do some work in the greenhouse. He asked Vivian to stay home and continue to monitor their new child.
