CHAPTER 28
Disappointment was a much more powerful emotion for Martin, once his anger subsided. He decided to give the twins a thorough examination and then send them to bed, without any further discussion.
Martin examined Brad first. "You're fine, except for a bit of indigestion."
Martin knew from the reports Rosie had provided that the formula would kick into high gear as soon as digestion started and from what Brad told him they ate, Martin estimated that would be any minute.
"You may have some trouble sleeping but you should be fine, by morning." Brad had a million questions; mostly about what he saw downstairs but his father would answer none of them.
Evie on the other hand was ashamed because of what they'd done and exceedingly quiet. When she kissed her father goodnight, the dam broke and her tears flowed down her face onto his shoulder. "Daddy, oh Daddy," she said in between her 'little girl' sobs. "Please tell me you don't hate us."
"Oh, Evie! You know I could never hate either one of you, I love you both very much... but, I'm extremely disappointed in you," he said, wiping the tears from her eyes. "I might have expected this from your brother, who tends to be reckless but I thought you were the level headed one and would never be party to such schemes. Anyway, no more talk tonight. We'll have plenty of opportunity to hash this over tomorrow. For now, just try and rest."
"Daddy, I'm scared! Are we really gonna be all right? I really don't feel very well."
Martin laughed. "What did you expect after devouring half the food in town? If I'm right, you'll both be better than you could ever expect tomorrow. However, tonight's eating rampage is going to make for a long hard night."
Martin kissed his daughter, then looked in on his wife, before he returned to the lab.
Brad had heard the laughter coming from his sister's room. It's always the same no matter what! Evie is still daddy's little girl, beautiful, creative, smart and she gets great grades without even trying. She is truly his favorite. Funny, I'm the one who wants to impress him, she doesn't even try but, she always succeeds. I don't even think my twin wants to be a scientist. I'll bet she'd rather be a model and fashion designer than a scientist, while I want it desperately. Oh, well!
Evie went to the door and made sure her father had gone back to the lab. She removed a large pad from under her bed and started sketching. The long gown with flowing train was her latest wedding creation. Maybe someday I can tell daddy that I don't want to be a scientist. She finished the sketch and signed her name: eve-lyn.
Martin spent the rest of the night in the lab. He watched the mixture develop into cells and then watched the cells split off and begin to grow. He set up a protective environment, incubation chamber and a direct link-up from the chamber to Rosie. He devised a probe and instructed her to monitor and record any and all, changes in development.
Even though Rosie had been with the Kane's since the beginning at the Institute, tonight she was stumped, "Dr. K, what are you anticipating?"
His only remark was a muttered, "I'm not sure yet but possibly the answer to a very old mistake."
Martin watched the fascinating results flashing before his eyes and by dawn's first light, he knew what he had to do.
He made some further preparations in the lab and then headed to the kitchen to prepare some breakfast. He set out a tray of toast, juice eggs and then carried it up to Vivian. He opened the bedroom door and saw that she was just getting out of bed. "Good morning," he put down the tray and kissed his wife on the cheek.
