CHAPTER 30

"Come with me and let me show you the miracle." Martin said as he led his wife downstairs to the lab.

"Oh, Martin! This is not what we set out to do! We were trying to clone organs not people, which I know you know is still illegal!"

"I know Viv! I've said the same things to myself for the past few hours but whatever is growing there is alive and we can't play God and pull the plug either!"

He checked Rosie's reports and then moved close to Vivian. "Look at these reports. It's definitely too late to stop the development now. When I first took the specs on the gross weight it was 5.6 grams. It's now up to one half kilogram and still seems to be growing." Martin pulled up a chair for Vivian. "At this stage, we can't compromise the experiment. We must let it take its course and closely monitor the outcome."

Vivian needed a reality check and decided she wanted to be alone in the lab. She suggested he check on the twins and she'd keep watch.

He nodded.

"Rosie, give me a wide analysis of the materials concentration numbers."

Martin heard his wife say as he walked up the stairs to the main level.

He didn't see the twins and decided they must still be sleeping off their big night!

Martin continued upstairs; knocked on their doors and asked his children to come down to the kitchen.

He was getting out the juice when the twins finally came downstairs. "Here, sit down Evie. How're you feeling?" he asked.

Evie smiled sheepishly, still embarrassed by their actions of last night. "I'm really tired but I guess I'm all right. Daddy, I'm really sorry!"

"I know!" He went over and kissed her on the forehead. "How about you, Brad?"

That's right, Brad thought, I'm always second to be asked but I've always known Evie's daddy's little girl. Instead of answering his father's questions, Brad said, "I know this sounds weird but I've a feeling like something strange is going on!"

Martin smiled, ignoring Brad's remark, just as Brad had ignored his question. Martin wasn't quite ready to address the issue. "Brad, do me a favor, let me do my doctor thing first and then we'll talk."

Martin poured some orange juice for them and suggested a small amount of food but they both declined.

The twins then took turns going into the living room with their father. Martin did a general examination including: blood pressure, eye hand coordination and reaction times.

When he was finished, they were seated in the kitchen again. "You're both doing fine," he told them, actually, your vitals are amazingly good. Even better than before. It appears you two have achieved what you recklessly set out to do. However, I'm going to draw some blood, just to be sure. I'll continue to monitor you both through the rest of the day and for at least the next twenty-four hours. But, if everything continues this way we'll start to test the results, then we'll know the extent of what you've done."

Anxious, Brad asked, "Why can't we test it now?"

Evie seemed anxious to know, too and asked if her father wouldn't reconsider.

"I think it may still be too soon to see any real results but, since you are both chopping at the bit, we can try a simple test. He instructed his children to face back to back and try to communicate with one another by thought alone."

Frustrated after a few minutes of trying, Brad declared, "Okay, we failed! It doesn't work!"

"Be patient Brad," his father admonished. "This is only one area and it may be a very difficult one at that. It also takes practice to perfect new abilities...as with anything."

Martin addressed his daughter and suggested, "Evie, let's try this...." He whispered to her, "Try to concentrate on Brad's hand. Think about, oh, let's say, his fingers. Just think about raising one of his fingers."

After what seemed like an eternity, she shrugged. "Brad's right, nothing's happening."

"Wait Sis," Brad exclaimed. "Were you doing something with my index finger? It was kinda twitching."

"Brad you heard dad tell me, didn't you?"

"No, honest! Keep concentrating!"

An exhausted Evie turned around to face her brother, "I can't Brad! It zapped all my energy. I feel like I just ran a marathon."

"Be patient," Martin encouraged his daughter. "It may take time to get adjusted to these new abilities but I believe, once you understand the source, you'll be able to harness the power and then moving a finger will turn out to be child's play. Do you want to try again?"

Evie nodded. Then concentrating all her efforts on Brad's finger, it began to move. "Brad, if you're just pretending and did that yourself, I'll..."

"No, I promise, I didn't. You did that, Sis!"

"Let me try it on your finger and you'll see."

Elated, Evie relaxed and waited.

Brad had a harder time but after trying for a few minutes, he finally succeeded in levitating her finger.

"It's a very strange feeling," Evie happily expressed. "I had an overwhelming urge to move my finger but it moved all by itself, without my doing anything... it was really, really weird."

"Remember both of you, this is not a contest," their father made the point. "You can't force the other to do something against his, or her, will. You must learn to work together.

Martin affectionately hugged Evie, "Okay, that's enough for now. You need added strength if you are going to keep trying. Get yourselves something, err, small, to eat and then get some rest. In the meantime, if you need anything, the intercom is on." Martin walked back downstairs and never heard what his son asked.

"Dad, wait," Brad cried out, "What happened to the mess we made in the lab?" Damn! Do you s'pose we screwed things up that bad that he doesn't even want to talk about it?"
