Chapter 37

Hours after returning to the lab, Vivian was still sitting gazing at the miracle before her when Martin came home. He'd gotten started on some formulations at the Cottage and decided instead to bring the samples home. He knew that way he could see that Vivian would get the rest she needed.

Vivian protested but she knew the events of the past few days had taken a toll. She finally gave in and only went upstairs because Martin promised to wake her when the twins got home.

After seeing his wife settled, Martin returned to the lab and logged into an active folder Rosie had been keeping which contained all the reports regarding their new child. He analyzed the data and then turned his attention to the child.

Martin was totally surprised and moved by what he was experiencing. His feelings were similar to those he had when the twins were born prematurely and were placed in the hospital incubator.

He turned his attention back to Rosie's report when he was suddenly startled by a sound coming from the tent. At first, he thought it was just his imagination but then he heard it again. The sound was definitely coming from the child. The boy's eyes were now fully open and Martin was shaken even more by what he saw. The eyes were the exact same deep blue and held the same expressiveness as Brad's. The boy turned his head to look directly at Martin and attempted to speak. Guttural sounds were the only thing Martin could detect. Martin watched the child's agitation grow. He got up and approached the tent panel so the boy could see him and in a low soothing voice spoke to the child, as he would to a newborn baby.

"Hey there, little guy, I'm your father!" Feeling foolish, Martin realized he could really have added a cute, "coo chee coo," and it wouldn't have made any difference. He decided to try another approach. "I am Dr. Martin Kane. Can you understand what I'm telling you?" Frustrated, Martin didn't know what else to say. "Can you nod your head?" No response. "Like this? Martin asked making the gesture. Martin saw the boy try to move his head.

"Good! You do understand, don't you?" Martin reasoned.

A hesitant, almost nod.

"Good. You're doing fine."

Martin was amazed at these first responses and continued, "For your protection, you will need to stay where you are, in this protected environment but it's only for now. Do you understand that?"

A more definite nod; this time with gestures of frustration.

"Take it easy." Martin said soothingly. "I can see you want to respond but I believe it may take time for you to speak. For right now, I just want you to nod. I'm going to come into the tent and perform some simple tests. I'll explain everything as I go, so don't be frightened."

Martin was not sure how this newly formed child seemed to understand more than should be possible but Martin continued on the premise that it didn't matter how, he just did. "I'm going to put on some protective clothing that may make me look like a creature from outer space," then Martin realized what he had said, "um, well, just don't be scared." The longer Martin stayed in the lab working with this child the more he felt this truly was his son. They were forming an incredible bond and Martin couldn't shake the nagging feeling they'd known each other forever but of course, that wasn't possible!

He finished his tests and watched as the boy, exhausted, retreated into sleep. Martin heard sounds through the intercom and gave Rosie new monitoring instructions, before he went upstairs to find Evie preparing a snack. "How's it going, Dad, you look tired?"
