Chapter Thirteen: Lies & Ice packs

Sitting at the dinner table for the first time in ages was surprisingly awkward for me.

Judging by the way my mother kept glancing between Tyler and I, I could tell she knew we were uncomfortable.

I'm glad she forgot about me sneaking in late a few weeks ago.

"So how were try-outs Sam?" My mother asked pleasantly before taking a sip of her tea.

I smiled. "Great, I made first string and coach said I'm a shoe in to become captain this season."

"Really? I thought Claire might make captain too." My mother said becoming interested.

I nodded. "She's also a potential, but he's been letting me lead practice here lately, so I'm almost a hundred percent sure I got captain."

"Nice." Tyler said nodding his head.

"That's good honey." My mother said with a genuine grin on her face. "Now what about you Tyler?"

He shrugged nonchalantly. "I didn't do soccer this year, but I am doing football, running back like always."

She nodded, and the table went silent for a little while.

"Well I have good news, great news actually. I'm going to be on vacation for the next two weeks, and guess what your grandmother sent me for a birthday present."

We stared at her blankly, and Tyler shrugged.

She scoffed laughing lightly as she reached on to the floor for something. "Plane tickets to the beach house in Hawaii! You guys can bring a few friends if you'd like as well."

"This is great! When are we leaving?" I questioned excitedly while Tyler grinned, and I could practically see the gears turning in his head.

"Fall break in a few days, you should bring Jason." My mother said smiling mischieveously, and I furrowed my brow.

"There's nothing going on between us nor will there ever be mother." I said, and ignored the sound of Tyler's scoff as he rolled his eyes mumbling under his breath.

"Oh please I used to say the same thing about your father, it's called denial honey." My mother said waving off my "denial".

"Whatever." I replied shaking my head.

Why is it that a boy and a girl can't just be friends without everyone else assuming there's more to the situation?

Once dinner was finally over I washed the dishes for my mother, and headed up to my room for some well needed sleep.

Walking into my room I turned on the light, and would've screamed loudly if I hadn't stopped myself after realizing who the idiot standing by my picture wall was.

"Ryder?" I questioned, and he turned to look at me.

I'm still not quite sure how I'm able to tell the difference between them so easily.

"What's up Sammie?" He said grinning as he looked me over, and I would've blushed at my attire if I cared just a little more.

I was wearing a minnie mouse over sized T-shirt, and a pair of spandex shorts with my hair up in a sloppy bun on top of my head.

"I find you standing in my room in the dark, and you ask me whats'up?" I questioned incrediously as I stared at him from across the room after shutting the door behind me.
