"So, what did you tell him?" Tess gave a cup of coffee to Tommy and took a chair next to him.
"Nothing important actually, I don't know why I thought I will find a picture of a broken man there."
"Well, Brendan is on his way to the police station now, I will go there tomorrow after my shift ends here. Did- Did you tell him, that she is alive?"
"No," Tommy whispered and looked at the body lying on the hospital bed.
"How is she? Do you think she can hear us?"
"I can't tell, Tommy. But, I've seen worse, really. The only thing I know is, that she is now stable, doctors keeps her in a coma, so she doesn't feel any pain, stress and her body can heal slowly. It's better than it seemed."
"Well also thanks to you. You were amazing, how you immediately helped her. It might be much worse without you," Tommy put his hand on Tess shoulder.
"I just did what I had to do. It's my job. Plus thank God, that bastard is a really bad shooter." Tess said and her pager beeped. "I have to go."

"It's been a week, are you sure everything is alright?" Brendan asked Tess, when he came to the hospital few days later.
"She has been through much this year. I mean first that car accident now this - two bullets in your body, can you even imagine it? All the pain? Long operation, she needs her time. She can breathe on her own, we just wait when she wakes up."

"Hey, Tommy, how are you? I was thinking, that maybe you could take a break and go outside with me? To get some fresh air in your lungs and move those muscles and bones a little bit, what do you say?" Brendan punched his younger brother to his arm.
Tommy looked tired, sad, black circles under his eyes, wrinkles in forehead.
"You should go. Don't worry, we will take care of her and if she wakes up, I'll call you immediatelly," Tess said.
"I don't know," Tommy whispered. "Tess, why is she still sleeping? I thought, she should be awake already."

"Get out of here, seriously, you need a break. She needs sleep, she needs rest, so she could gather all the strength. Give her a time, Tommy."

"Yeah, give me a time, Tommy."

They all widened their eyes and turned.
My eyelids were so heavy I could barely keep my eyes open, my voice weak and raspy.
"Oh my God, Shani!" Tess exclaimed! "I'll go for a doctor!" she ran out from the room.
"Hey," Tommy came to me and sat on the bed.
"I am so thirsty," I whispered and closed my eyes again.
"When the doctor come I'll ask her if I can give you a water, okay?"
"Hmmm," I just hummed and found his hand.
"I had a dream about you. It was really nice and it makes me wonder, if it was just a dream or forgotten  memories."
"Tell me," Tommy smiled.
"I can't, when Brendan is here," I opened my eyes and smiled at Brendan.
"It was kind of a sexy dream."
"Then I am sure it was a memory," Tommy chuckled and his laugh made me want to laugh too.
"Oh, this hurts," I touched my chest.
"I can leave you two alone now," Brendan said, but the doctor with Tess entered the room.
"Hello, Shani," woman smiled at me and Tommy moved, so she could check me.
"I am doctor Green. I am glad to see you awake, now I will do some basic tests to see how is your body doing, alright?"
I nodded and looked back at Tommy.
He stood behind the doctor, ready to leave with Brendan, so he could give us some privacy.
"Wait a second," I whispered. "Tommy, come here."
He came to me and took my hand.
"Yes?"
"Kiss me," I said softly and he kissed me gently.
"I would say awww, if it wasn't inapropriate," doctor Green whispered to Tess with a smile.

"Listen, when we will be done here, can I talk to you both?" she looked at me and Tommy, when he was leaving.
"Sure, I'll be waiting in the hallway," he nodded.
"Tess, could you be so kind and call doctor Murphy, please?"
"Doctor Murphy?" Tess asked surprised.
"Yes."

"So, let me look at you," she finally turned at me.
"I know what is this about," I whispered, when Tess left.
"I'm sorry, what?" doctor Green looked at me.
"I know it. I felt it," I started to cry.
"Shani," she sat on the bed next to me. "Relax, please. I didn't know. I wanted you to be as calm as possible during this check up, but we will do it later, I guess, hm?"
"Do it now, I- I can manage."

Few minutes and tests later new doctor entered and doctor Green called Tommy to join us.

"What is this about?" Brendan asked Tess,  but she just shook her head.

"My name is doctor Murphy," older doctor gave me a smile and introduced himself. "When a wounded person comes to the hospital, it is normal to do a blood tests. So we know basics about the patient - like type of blood, we also check if there is not an infection, some serious disease, that could  be malignant for doctors. In your blood, Shani, we found a high level of chorionic gonadotropin. I was told you are a veterinarian, so, uhm, I guess you know what I am talking about?"

"I do," I said softly crying already.
"What is going on? I- I think I am the only one in this room, who has no clue, what's wrong," Tommy watched me with a fear and concerns in his eyes.

"It means, that I'm pregnant. Or should I say I was?" I took a look at doctor Murphy.
"You still are, but..."

"Oh my god! Really? You? What?" Tommy interrupted him. "So, I guess that was the 'I don't wanna drink coffee' and 'that pizza got me food poisoning'? You knew it?"
"I wasn't sure," I whispered and he kissed me, again and again. "But Tommy, love, listen," I tried to talk through his kisses and I had to laugh. He made me laugh, that's when I understand, that in the end, it doesn't matter, what doctors are going to say, because even Tommy knew, it doesn't have to be a good and positive information. We will make it through together. He will help me, just his presence makes me stronger.

I took his head between my hands.
"Listen to the doctors for few more seconds, please," I said.
"I don't want to hear it, I see in your eyes, that something is not right."
"It will be okay, Tommy."

I looked at the doctor and he continued.
"Well. Your body went through a lot, blood loss, big trauma, stress, operation, we had to give you drugs, anaesthestics. When pregnant woman is in the life threatening situation, the rule says save mother first. We tried to regulate and fit therapy to save your life, but at the same time to hurt the baby as little as possible."

"So... How's baby doing now?" Tommy stoode up, watching them
tensely.
"Last check-up went good. But it's still too soon to tell. Whenever you are ready, we can do the ultrasound check-up and -"
"Do it now!" I claimed.
"Oh, okay."

They made a call and sister brought a big ultrasound machine. I saw Tess standing in the hallway, when they opened the doors.

"So, I will be very gentle and careful, to not make you any harm around your wound," doctor said and nurse helped me to uncover my belly.
"It's still so small, is it okay?" Tommy watched me.
"Yeah, don't worry, the baby now is just few centimetres long, you'll see soon," he put a cold gel on my skin and I hissed.
"It's sensitive, right? It's because of the wound, it will be better soon," he gave me a smile and switched on the ultrasound.
"So, let's take a look," he said under his breath and watched the screen. "Yes, here you are little one," he smiled and turned the screen toward me.
"See? Here that small thing, that looks like a bean? That's your baby."

It was the first time I saw Tommy crying for real.

"And let's make it better, shall we?" doctor smiled. Quick beating sound echoed through the room. The most beautiful sound I have ever heard.
Tess, standing in the hallway, raised her head.
"Oh my God, can you hear it?" she looked at Brendan and entered the room. "May I?"
"Yeah, sure," I whispered and she went to take a look.
"Everything seems fine now, but as I said, we will know more in next few weeks," doctor Murphy said, before he left. "Just rest, try to relax, think positively. I've heard, that detectives want to talk to you as soon as possible. I think, we can delay your interrogation for few days, no need to rush."

"Thank you," I whispered and he left.

"I can't stop staring at this picture. Is it even possible, that there is actually my baby?" Tommy sat next to me with the picture from the ultrasound.
"Did you even listen to what doctor said?" I asked him quietly and closed my eyes.
"I did. But I believe that, it is our time to be happy. After all that we have been through, this is our way out of the bad things. Like new beginning. Don't you feel that way?"

I opened my eyes and looked at him. He had that smile on his lips. I smiled back softly.
"Come to me, big guy," I moved and he laid next to me and carefully helped me to get my head on his shoulder. I couldn't hold my eyelids anymore, I was extremely tired.
"Take a rest," he said. "It's okay, I'll be watching over you two."
