Anna's Point of View:
Shit, he's staring at me! What do I do? Anna, you idiot, say something to him! I thought as John and I locked eyes. It felt like hours had passed, but in reality, only a couple of minutes. Out of the corner of my eye, I noticed Jass holding Jack back from attacking both of us, mouthing to me to say something to John.
"Anna? I'm in the future, aren't I?" John said, his voice breaking the silence between us.
"Yeah, you are, John." I managed to get out, taking a cautious step closer to him.
"Bang!" The sound echoed from the kitchen. Both John and I looked at each other in surprise before turning to see where the noise came from.
"Sorry, I'll be right back. Stay here," I told John quickly before running to the kitchen, where I found Jass and Jack covered in flour.
"What in the world happened?" I exclaimed, looking at my dog who gave me the "I'm sorry" puppy eyes.
"They clearly wanted to roll in flour," John's voice came from behind me, causing me to jump.
"JOHN! I told you to stay in the living room! Not scare me half to death!" I snapped at him.
"Anna, no offense love, but you're not my mum. Besides, I wanted to see what all the commotion was about," John said, placing his hand on my back. Sparks. Tiny, electric sparks ran up my spine at the touch.
"Aww, you two are such a cute couple," Jass squealed, snapping a quick photo of us.
"No, Jass, we aren't... and—" I started, but John cut me off.
"I agree with your mate here, love. We do make a lovely couple," John said with a grin.
What on earth is happening? Why are my friend and John teaming up against me? I thought, bewildered, as Jass began packing up and ushering Jack out of the kitchen, leaving little white paw prints on the floor.
"Well, I should get going. John, it was nice meeting you," Jass said, shaking John's hand and pointing at me. "You, missy, keep me updated."
Wait a minute... She's not leaving this mess on my floor, is she? I thought.
"Jass! Aren't you going to help clean up this mess?" I quickly ran to stop her as she headed for the door.
"Well, I figured you'd want some alone time with, you know, who," Jass said, one hand on the door handle.
"And who's going to help me clean this up, huh?" I asked, hands on my hips, trying to guilt her into helping.
"Oh, pish posh. You've got John! Have him help you," she winked, closing the door behind her.
"You owe me big time, Jass! Ugh!" I groaned in frustration before making my way back to the kitchen. To my surprise, the flour mess was already cleaned up. Who cleaned this up so fast? Did John do it? I thought, confused, as whining came from the bathroom. Following the flour paw prints, I found Jack in the bathtub, with John washing the flour off him. Aww, that's too cute. Wait—no! Stop it, Anna!
"Thanks for cleaning up, John," I said, leaning against the doorframe.
"No problem, love," John replied, looking up at me with a smile. He spoke to Jack in a babyish voice. "Now you're all clean, yes you are, yes you are."
It made me laugh.
"John, do you even know how you got here?" I asked, finally addressing the question that had been bugging me.
"No, love, last thing I remember is writing you a letter and then... blacking out," John said, standing up and walking toward me.
"I'm sorry for how we left things on the phone, John," I said, my voice filled with guilt.
"I get it, love. It was hard for you, with me being in the past. But somehow, some miracle, here I am," John said, pulling me into a hug.
"John... you know you have to go back, right? As much as I want you here, it's dangerous," I said, a quiver of sadness in my voice as I looked up into his eyes.
"I'm willing to take a risk if you are, love," John replied, brushing my hair back gently.
"Besides, I can actually touch you. Hold you in my arms. I don't want to give that up," he added softly.
"You're going to be the death of me, John," I said, my voice laced with doubt. This is probably going to end in heartbreak, I thought. But, John was right. I could actually touch him, hold him... and I didn't want to give that up either.
