~Her Family~
Jack reared up at Atlantic Black the boys playing once more. Promise in all her glory trotted over to me nuzzling my arm. My hand found its way to her soft nose stroking it. Amaya going straight to grazing the lushes untouched grass. Promise curled her upper lip touching it to my cheek. It was a trick I taught her after Samantha had CrastBolt perform the trick with her.
I heard a loud neigh and looked over the fence. A beautiful black pinto Thoroughbred mare raced along a fence. Her long legs stretching as she galloped. I've never seen a pinto Thoroughbred, it was quite a sight to behold.
Atlantic Black nickered back to the mare, he was always the talkative one. The mare bolted jumping in the air, throwing her head around, she leaped in the air letting out a nice buck.
She was a few yards away from were we were. Amaya wasn't at all interested and went about her day eating. Jack was watching her but wasn't too curious to talk. Promise didn't pay a nick of attention her eyes focused on me, her nose rubbing against my arm.
I stroked her nose gently, barely grazing her coat. It wasn't long until six finally rolled around, I had been with the horses practically all day. Only leaving when I decided to change and wash up for the dinner. I walked out of the front door to see Linda in a golf cart, smiling at me.
"I figured I'd give you a ride, until you find your way around." I nodded sitting in the passenger. She punched the gas turning around, she straightened dust all around us. Before she took off at a blazing sixty mph!! My hands clamped tightly around the rail holding on for dear life.
She drove for two more minutes before screeching to a stop. I quickly swallowed back my lunch, can't throw up in front of my host... She hopped right out opening the front door for me. I took uneasy steps as I walked over to her. I entered through the door taking in her house.
The floor was polished wood, the walls were built of smooth logs. To the right was a fairly big kitchen with an island in the middle, to the left was a dining table with plates and silverware already set out.
Behind the dining room was the living room. A nice fireplace made of white bricks built into the wall. Above the fireplace was a TV hanging from the wall. In front of the fireplace was a giant leather couch that seats six people. On either side of the couch was small table stands that held a lamp with antlers at the top, coasters with duck pictures sew on them.
A TV remote on the left arm chair of the couch. Between the couch and fireplace laid a rug made of fake bear fur. I was beginning to really like this house. Linda showed me to the table, asking me to sit which I did. She began to put food onto plates and pour drinks.
I felt awkward as her husband, son, and daughter came down from upstairs. "Somethin' is smellin' mighty fine Honey." Her husband called meeting her in the kitchen. The front door opened, a women, two teen girls, a man, and two little kids walked in.
"Danny glad y'all could make it, Lola's ballet ended early?" Linda guessed as she took out more plates. "Yes ma'am, what do you need me to do?" Danny asked. He was a tall African American, wearing a blue shirt and jeans. I smiled when he turned, the back of his shirt said ballet dad.
He walked over to Linda as she gave him instructions, he took the plates from her and put food onto them. Can I just shrink into a corner or something? There were so many people!!! I know no one, zero, zilch, no bueno! One of the teenagers walked over to me.
Her hair was brown and curled perfectly, she had a face full of makeup but she looked beautiful. "Hey I'm Racheal Kade, you must be Kiley Tyler," she assumes shaking my hand. "Yeah, nice to meet you." She nodded back to me, going over to the kitchen to grab a plate. It wasn't long before everyone was seated at the table.
"Kiley here will be helpin' Jessie with that crazy filly," Linda explained shoving a spoonful of macaroni into her mouth. "Do you have horsies?" Lola asked. She was no older than five, dirty blonde hair, and the bluest of eyes. "Yes," I answered awkwardly. I gained a few more people's attention at the mention of horses.
"What breeds?" Racheal asked. I picked around my food to avoid making eye contact with anyone. But, I didn't want to be rude so I looked up at her and answered, "Hanoverian, Trakehner mixed with Arabian, and two Quarters..."
Racheal nodded, silence was deadly, "I work with Saddlebreds, I have a gelding he's a spaz." I've never paid that much attention to Saddlebreds... I wonder what they're used for. "What sport?" I asked my curiosity getting the better of me. "Harnesslink, he loves the adrenaline, how about yourself?"
"Originally I show jumped, but then I was given a team roping horse... and occasionally I gallop around on my pinto." She nodded as my hands grew sweaty. The food was delightful! I've never had such an amazing meal before.
"You race?" Came a girl seated next to Jessie. I had recognized him from the photos with his horses. "No, but I did last summer for a short time," I remembered Angel's beautiful coat, her high spirited self, even the shine on her coat when she was ahead of everyone.
"Summer?" The girl went on. "I went to a horse camp last year, Sorrel Hill?" I might as well see if anyone knows it. The girl next to Racheal smiled, "I love that place I always race with Lylla on that speedy Thoroughbred mare she had. You were the one that had the chestnut Hanoverian! Y'all put up some tough completion, beautiful filly that you have by the way. Promise is it?"
I nodded slightly embarrassed that she said and knew so much. "Oh Kiley where are my manners, sorry I've been so busy with dinner I forgot to introduce everyone to you," Linda smiled. "Over there by Racheal is Sky, over there is my son Jessie, and right next to him is my daughter Nicky. Then next to Daniel, there's his adopted daughter Lola and his son Lucas, right next to me is Vallery and my husband Robert."
She said pointing to everyone. I nodded throwing off a welcoming smile. "Wait you said you went to Sorrel Hill last year? Your name's Kiley Tyler and you own a Hanoverian called Jack?" Jessie asked me.
I didn't tell anyone Jack's name... why so specific? "Yeah why?" He shrugged, "No reason," and continued eating. Really? He asks me such a detailed question and doesn't even bother to tell me why.
The rest of the evening was filled with questions, questions about me, the horses, show jumping, my family, but my favorite topic was friends..... just kidding!
"So Kiley, what are your friends like?" Robert looked at me. "Umm... they're interesting. One of them is planning on going to a top college to become a marine biologist," I added remembering Emily excited about it.
"And the rest?" He still hadn't taken his gaze off of mine. To be honest the action made me a little uncomfortable, "Her brother is going to be a movie director or so he says. Another wants to be a videogame tester..." There is really no question which of those described Luke and which one described Ben.
"Another wants to be a forensic scientist she's assessed with all the movies or Netflix series about them," that was Hannah she was a total nerd when it came to being a forensic scientist.
"Then another wants to be a professional horse trainer and the other a professional reiner." Which was Will and Xavier. "And the last want to become like Don't Blink, but in show jumping terms." And for the finale Samantha.
"And you?" He asked. Gosh why so many personal questions? "I don't know yet, yeah jumping is fun but so is all the other equestrian sports I've tried..."
He nodded thankfully not asking another question. Dinner was over in a blink of an eye, my ears only hearing the part where I could do whatever just had to be up by five in the morning. I was already at my 'house' tacking up Jack for an evening ride.
He was very excited ready to spread his legs and explore. I mounted him and rode out of the paddock. Jack being Jack wanted to go straight to the pinto filly racing up and down the fence line, but I took him to the jumping arena instead.
Turns out this place had about everything for any discipline! Jack was a power house just waiting for the door to open. I trotted him along the fence line, he pulled on the bit but didn't disobey me.
It wasn't long before we were loping over small two footers eventually going to four footers. Jack breathed with me our eyes focus on the task at hand. I blew through my lips, my eyes never leaving the seven foot jump before us. Jack squared up to it, his breath heavily audible.
I inhale as he lifted into the air, for a split second a thin strand of mane touched my chin before it bended with the wind. We landed soundly both of us exhaled, as I loped him around the curve. He came to a stop sweat dripping from his once light chestnut coat.
I hopped off of him, grabbing his reins and walking him back to our house. I untacked him and fed the horses, walking inside showering. I had received seven messages from my friends. How's it going?- Will
Did you see Don't Blink yet- Samantha
Girl! It's the loneliest at my house without you- Hannah
Quit freaking blowing up my phone I'm on a date!- Luke
Now I'm definitely not going to stop texting!!- Ben
Such a weirdo- Xavier
I smiled, I missed their playful arguments. They were always so amusing to read, especially when someone was targeted by the whole group.
