At lunch the next day Hunter set out to find Cole and talk to him about yesterday.
"Hey, drawer b... I mean Cole! I need to talk to you!" Hunter yelled down the hallway as Cole was turning the corner to get to his locker.
"Oh, me! Okay but why. Does this have to do with Dalton?" Cole said trying not to make this voice sound as mean when he said Dalton's name.
"Yes, but it's important." Hunter said trying to get Cole to come with him. "Please."
Cole nodded yes and followed Hunter to an empty music room and locked the door.
Dalton couldn't know what Hunter was doing he would never forget it and use it against him.
"Okay before I start, I want you to know that Dalton doesn't know about this and his never will. And Cole, you are a nice person, I'm sorry if this is going to bother you." Hunter exposed before getting too into what was about to be said.
"Okay," said Cole timidly sitting across from Hunter, far enough to make it less awkward but not far enough to make Cole feel safe.
"First things first, Cole at any point in time did you like Dalton? I need to know so that I can continue properly." Hunter asked anxiously.
"What!? Why?!" Cole asked looking offended then seeing the pleading look on Hunter's face. "Okay, fine. Yes, yes I did. I thought he was very cute at first and thought he would be nice and we hung out, yeah I did start liking him more. Are you happy?"
"Well, I need to tell you that even though Dalton did all that messed up stuff, he actually really likes you more than you could ever know. He might even love you but he refuses to say it out loud to himself much less you." Hunter said with a sigh.
"Why should I believe that? After all he did. If he cared like that why all the trouble." Cole replied his tone changing into something softer.
"You see Dalton has never really had crushes like this and no one has ever treated him like you did. He tried to handle it the only way he knew how. Dalton doesn't usually try that hard with people the only reason he got so extreme was because he actually cared about which was frightening and different for him. Cole, he's literally crazy for you." Hunter tried to explain in the simplest way he could.
"So what you said was true?" Cole said in a mumble hoping Hunter wouldn't hear.
"What," question Hunter noticing Cole's sudden shyness.
"I should tell you that I was at the park when you were talking to Dalton. I was on the swing by the bushes and fence and you had been talking pretty loud. It was kind of awkward because I wanted to leave before I heard anything but I couldn't because things got too personal too quickly. I heard everything. I didn't mean to intrude." Cole said peering everywhere except Hunter.
"So, you heard and saw when Dalton collapsed and you heard me talking about his health and meds." Hunter inquired.
"Yes but I didn't tell anyone or anything." Cole said feeling scared of what Hunter might do.
"See Cole, you're driving him bonkers. He won't take his anti-depressants and his other meds plus he can't sleep and he won't eat. He's just trying to think of ways to get you to not hate him, at least." Hunter spoke.
"I dint want to believe that it was true, that I could drive Dalton to do that. When I was listen from the swing I felt sad for him and I saw the weakness that he's been masking all this time. I want to say something or do something. I felt as if I was needed," explained Cole.
"That because you were," said Hunter quietly waking over to Cole a and touching his shoulder.
"Thank you, Hunter for telling me this but now I need some time to think," said Cole looking up at him and walking to the door.
"You're welcome, Cole...I mean drawer boy." Hunter said with a friendly smirk and a wink.
Cole exited the room and carried on his day as usually. He walked with his friends home and sat in his room quietly thinking until he fell asleep.
