At some point, the little boy was grateful for the friendship made with the mysterious boy. Although he knew very well that it was risky he was having too much fun.

The two were in his room since it was one of the safest places to be. On rainy days like this they would build a fort from the blankets and pillows and play inside of it.

"Hey, I have a question." The mysterious boy asked.

A part of their deal in friendship was to not reveal their names. It only felt fair since their identities were to be kept secret and to prevent any slip ups if they were questioned.

"Sure, what is it?" The little boy asked.

"Why is it important for you to wear a mask?" The mysterious boy asked. "Why will we be killed if we see your face?"

"When I was a toddler they said the Nightwalkers attacked the palace in order to kill the heir. Someone had told them about my existence." The little boy started. "In that attack they killed my older brother. In the end, my father decided to keep how I look a secret."

"That way in case of another attack they won't know who the next heir is?" The mysterious boy finished. The little boy nodded. "Do you miss your brother?"

"Honestly, I don't even remember him anymore. I barely have any memories of him." The little boy answered.

"I have an idea!" The mysterious boy declared. He took the mask that laid on the floor and a couple of his markers.

"What are you doing?" The little boy asked, worried.

"If you need to wear a mask you shouldn't make it so plain." The mysterious boy said. He proceeded to decorate the plain mask, making it look more lively. "Perfect!"

The little boy watched him work with such wonder. Why would such a cheery spirit like him not allowed to be outside? He felt glad he had him to himself, but something felt wrong.

"Why are you not allowed to be seen by others?" The little boy blurted out. He realized what words had just left his mouth and instantly put his hands to cover it. "I'm sorry I know you can't tell me."

"It's alright, you're my friend now anyway." The mysterious boy assured. "I can trust you right?"

"Of course you can." The little boy said.

"It's because I'm dangerous. My father doesn't want anyone to be hurt." The mysterious boy said.

"How are you that dangerous? You're human right?" The little boy asked.

"It's because I'm a monster."

The little boy let the statement sink in. The silence was thick as the two stare at each other. The mysterious boy was the first to break away and smile.

"Well, that's what he says. I just follow whatever dad says." The mysterious boy laughed. The little boy nodded. It may have been a way for his father to protect him from the outside world.

There was no way he could be a monster. There are no creatures more powerful and terrifying than Vampires and Nightwalkers.

Or so he thought.
