Split Runaway

The sun was begging to be seen, it's bright rays remained behind the mountains, causing the sky to turn a light orange. The unbearable heat from all day started to disappear and be replaced with the bitter coldness out here.

"There should be a shack near here," I mumbled to myself with desperation. Staying round here when the sun was starting to go away was the most dangerous thing we could do to ourselves.

From the left of me I took notice of a small shop painted bubblegum pink. We pulled up and quickly snuck in through the back.

"Shh," I whispered to Show Pony as I pulled out my ray gun.

My eyes landed on two men talking among themselves with a keg in between them, then shortly after started to count the sleeping bodies on the floor.

My right hand did a small gesture to indicate how many there were vs us.

"It's not worth it," I mumbled.

When we turned around we were both greeted by guns in our faces, "silly goose."

I stood in front of Show Pony and showed them my gun, not wanting them to see I was a threat.

"Come on hand them over," they stepped in a bit to retrieve the weapons. I did as they asked but tossed them on the floor by his foot.

"RICK!" They screamed out.

"Quit your screeching!" The man from earlier stood by the door entrance, clearly pissed off at his buddy.

"Well if it isn't Miss. Runaway," Rick responded with a growl.

I had absolutely no idea who these men where, nor understood why I was a Miss all of a sudden. Runaway wasn't even a surprise because I indeed did runaway.

"What zones are y'all from?"

Show Pony was the first to answer, "Zone 3."

"Zone 6," I looked at Show with a warning glance before returning my attention back to the men.

Rick cocked an eyebrow at us and ushered that we be escorted inside. The both of us got seated on a couch that smelled of pure cigarettes and sex.

"What are y'all here for?"

My back sent a jolt of electricity through my spine that shocked me to the bone. My head whipped around as fast as a bullet and I instantly sprung up to attack them.

My ears picked up the various guns aimed at me, occasionally I also heard Show shouting at me to act proper.

This did not stop me from landing in a couple of punches to their face, I was stopped when someone body slammed me down. The wind in my lungs being wiped out, fuck.

"We have two of our own on, a middle aged man and a little girl. Both went missing two days ago, and still haven't been spotted out in our zones, which leads me to believe they are out here in hiding." I mustered out the strength to stare at the punching bag's eyes.

Punch bag was just a nick name for this loser named Jacob, best friends with Tyler. My worst enemy ever since he killed Tyler in the Analog wars.

"Wow if that's what it took for you to come here, I should have killed your precious leader a long time ago," punch bag spoke with a smirk. "I'm kidding, no need to fret!"

My hand felt a release of pressure when I let them lay flat on the floor, taking notice of the bruised spots on my knuckles. Show Pony stared at me curiously with such patience.

"There's been break in's lately, Jet Lag over there," punch bag pointed to a lanky man with long greasy black hair. "He'll show you the spots."

"For now tho you're definitely not welcome here, you sleep outside."

We were both kicked out of the small shack for us to gather our things from the Tans Am. Slowly we walked a small distance from the shack to be reunited with the boys beat up car and my motor bike.

"I'll stay in watch first, you get some sleep."

"Thanks," I bowed my head to show Pony I was grateful to have him here.

My body slumped itself into the car and tried to get itself comfortable for a quick rest. Soon enough my breathing slowed down.

...

January 24, 20–

"Don't fuck up the rotation!"

I zoned back into my friends conversations when one of them decided to do something stupid. The lighted blunt in their hands told me we had officially started, there was only four people in our circle today, leaving us to take as many hits before we passed the blunt. It got passed to me last, I placed it between my lip and sucked in. I kept the smoke in my mouth and then inhaled again till it hurt, then passed the blunt.

We passed the blunt, still having a good rotation, until I decided I had enough for one day.

"Take one for the road!"

I shook my head and feeling the hits from earlier hit me, I was stoned. Didn't matter now since I'm stoned, might as well take one for the road as Tyler said.

"One for the road," I said as took a drag that lasted longer than five seconds. I breathed out a bit and then inhaled to get all the smoke back into my lungs.

"KO!" I giggled when this last hit really did it for me. I passed the blunt back forward and stared at Tyler for a bit.

"Lets head back to school yeah?"

...

"Show Pony get some rest, I got it from here."

I rubbed my eyes to get rid of the sleepiness I still felt. I stepped out the car and into the bitter cold air.

The shack from earlier slowly blended in with the night sky as each light went off, finally leaving me in the dark. I sat on the front of the car and laid my back against the glass to look up at the night sky, being entranced by the stars.

From all the memories I had before the Analog wars, before any of this started, I only remember my high school years. Four years of my life in an everlasting hell, well it still  remains the same even after all these years.

I was best friends with Tyler aka Sci-fi Blaster, anyways we knew each other by Jacob. Jacob's group of friends came into my life during my Junior year of high school. Tyler enjoyed my company around them more than ever and I didn't want to leave Tyler's side so I clashed along with them and leaving behind my group.

"KO," I whispered softly.

The words I let out vanished into the air, only to exist between those who knew the words. A code name to know that all hell was coming.
