That evening at home, Leigh was staring in space at a wall in her room.
At this point I really just want her to leave me alone. She was not the type who could handle constant harassment. What did she have to do to get Lilly to stop? I don't know. All of the solutions require attention and drama. She was trying to avoid that as much as possible. I suppose I could try speaking with her tomorrow in private. I just want her to stop. Lilly was not unreasonable right? It would not be so hard for Leigh to get her to leave her in peace.
The girl sighed. She was feeling rather glum this evening. It was the kind of glum that made her unable to get things done. I've got to do my homework and then all of these worksheets Mum left me. There were at least three that her mother wanted to see later tonight. Leigh had not even started one.
Okay Leigh-Anne. You need to be happy to focus. Think of something happy . . . so she thought and what came to mind was Jesy.
Moby Dick! She remembered Jesy laughing about that and it made her laugh too. A whale's dick. Leigh barked with laughter at that. "Whales don't even have those Jes . . . at least I don't think theirs is anything like a human's" She shook her head as she felt better.
"I'm really excited for your date with her Leigh-Anne." Dr Weasel was next to her.
Leigh took him up and hugged him. She felt even better now. "I am too Dr W." She giggled. "Where do you think we should have it?"
"The bus station carries memories."
Leigh was not sure. "It's a bus station."
"That sure is true."
Leigh laughed. Tomorrow I could ask her where she wants to go. "Do you think she'd like a picnic somewhere nice?"
"Maybe . . . you'll see her tomorrow so don't hurt your head tonight."
Leigh nodded and then yawned. "It's so strange. When I said I didn't want a boyfriend I didn't expect to get a girlfriend instead." She was okay with that though.
______________
Jesy was fishing through her blazer pocket as deep as she could the next morning before she went to school.
The store cashier's face said 'unamused' as he watched the little girl below his desk. "If you don't have the money then you don't have the money little girl."
Jesy shushed him just as she got the two pound coins out. "Boom." She smirked at him then placed it on his desk.
The cashier rolled his eyes taking the money. "Here." He put the item she was purchasing in a bag and gave it to her.
Jesy thanked him then skipped eagerly to her brother's side. Johnny was at the door, eyeing an old looking skateboard on a shelf. "Nimrod!"
He perked up. "What?"
Jesy laughed. "I'm glad you know your name."
Johnny's cheeks got hot. "Whatever. Are we leaving or not?"
Jesy nodded and they left the small store. She sighed in content while trotting the sidewalk. "Today's gonna be another great day for Jesy N." She peered into her bag and looked at what she bought. It was a pretty rose for a pretty person.
Johnny eyed her in disgust. She had been acting a lot happier lately. "So, who's that for eh?" Girls did not buy the roses. What was wrong with his sister? She's one of those feminist types I guess . . . good for her.
Jesy looked at him. "Wouldn't you like to know?" She started skipping ahead.
He frowned but followed. "Is it a boy you like? Just saying, guys don't usually dig the roses Jes." His sister didn't usually spend time getting gifts for other people.
