"Oh my god, you'd look so good in that!" Clara exclaimed, pointing to a shirt.
"Um, that's a girl's shirt," he pointed out, chuckling.
"It'd be a guy's shirt if you wore it. And I agree, it'd look good on you," Daniel added.
Thinking that over, Nick shrugged, amused smile on his face. "Why not, I'll try it on."
They found one in his size and put it with the other things they had bought.
When he was trying things on, he tried on the shirt last. The material was so light and soft, it fell down around him like he imagined something magical would.
He turned to the mirror, actually liking what he saw. His brother and sister had been right- it did look good on him. He grinned, glad he had gone along with trying it on.
"Come on, show us!" Clara said excitedly.
He did so, and they immediately said they loved it. He did too.
That night, overhearing his parents' argument, it was clear they disagreed.
"It is a girl's shirt, Michael! I'm not letting our little boy be some- some cross-dressing freak!"
"Jane, it's a shirt, not a dress."
"How do you think it starts?! Irresponsible parents letting impressionable kids think this is okay!"
"I'm not in love with it either, but let the boy express himself. If it's a shirt, so be it. If it's a dress, so be it. It's his choice."
"Are you insane?! He is a boy! You'd let our son wear a dress?!"
"If he wanted to!"
Nick knew it was bad. His father never yelled, he never lost his temper. He sank back into the corner of his room.
This was his fault. He did this.
"Fit parents wouldn't let their kids do that."
"Fit parents? What's that supposed to mean?"
