"Thank that friend of yours for me," Nick's father said on their way home. "I don't know how that would have ended without him, I mean, his evidence was foolproof. Not to mention the look on his parents' faces, I know they hate me. To have their own son side against them, god, it's so vidica-"

"What would you say if I was a girl?" Nick had been lost in his thoughts, the words just slipped out.

His father paused, clearly trying to catch up with Nick's train of thought. "I'd say that we horribly misnamed you. What do you mean? Like, if you were transgender, or if you had been a girl at birth? Because I'd be fine with either."

Nick rested his head on the window. "I don't know what I mean. I just... I don't know. I think I might be a girl, dad."

"Okay. Are you still figuring it out, or is that an understatement?"

"I'm still figuring it out. I definitely know I like boys, but I don't know if that makes me gay or straight. It's all really confusing."

He nodded. "Do you have someone to talk to? I mean, I'm totally here for you, but I don't really understand what you're going through. It might help to have a friend who does."

"I do, but they don't know how I'm feeling, exactly."

"Well, if you feel comfortable with it and think they'll understand, I think you should tell them. That way they can help you."

Nick smiled, heart feeling light. "Have I ever told you how much I love you?"

"Hm, tell me once more, just to be sure."

He laughed. "I love you."

"I love you too."
