Katherine looked back and forth between the two.
"You two know each other?" Katherine asked, confused. The pair were silent for a second before Ari spoke up.
"We used to be friends back before I moved to New Mexico," she said, hesitantly. She stepped inside and closed the door behind her. Katherine could tell something was off. Did they use to date? Did I just move in with my boyfriend's ex?
"Oh, wow, well uh... small world I guess," she said. Jack was still silent.
"Well I'd uh... I'd love to hear your guys' story. I'll go get some snacks I'll be back in a few minutes." With that she walked into the kitchen.
"It's good to see you again Jack," Ari said hesitantly, brushing a strand of hair behind her ear.
"Cut the crap!" Jack snapped. Ari looked taken aback by his sudden response.
"Jack I..."
"You just left us all, you left Davey and just moved to New Mexico with barely a goodbye and all you have to say is 'it's good to see you again Jack!'" Ari cringed at the mention of Davey, her ex and the only person she had ever really loved.
"Jack you know I had to move there for my job. I had no choice!"
"You has a hundred choices! You could've not taken the job, you could've let Davey come with you, you could've at least bothered to write!" Jack was filled with anger. When someone hurt one of his friends, one of his brothers, he took it personally.
"Jack I needed to take that job. I wasn't being hired here and being a reporter was my dream. I couldn't give that up for some guy!" She regretted the words the second she said them.
"Oh I see, Davey was just 'some guy' to you."
"Jack that's not what I..."
"No! I mean clearly the job was worth it. That's why you're still working in New Mexico and not back on the stinkin' streets of New York."
"That is not fair," she said through clenched teeth.
"No no please, tell me about this amazing job that was so worth leaving all of us."
"I made a mistake Jack! Please can we just put this behind us." She had a pleading look in her eyes.
"Fine. On one condition," he said. Ari nodded.
"You stay away from Davey."
"I'm sorry?"
"It broke Davey when you left him a year ago. I can't have him go through that again. You don't try to get back together with him, you don't spend time with him, I don't even want him to know you're back in town." Ari was about to protest but decided that what he was saying made sense. Why bring back all those painful memories? They're painful for both of us.
"Deal. But Katherines going to come back soon and I don't want my new roommate to hate me within a day of me moving in so can we act like we're on good terms?"
"Fine."

"You okay?" Katherine asked when Ari walked out of the spare room. Her face was red and her eyes were puffy.
"I-I just got a call from my friend. They just finished with my boss' trial. They found him not guilty."
"Oh my gosh Ari I'm so sorry!" Katherine placed a comforting hand on her shoulder. Arietta walked to the couch and sat down, hugging her knees to her chest.
"I don't know what to do. He has no clue that I'm in New York so I don't think I have to worry about him coming after me but..." her voice trailed off.
"Ari, I'm sure you're going to be fine. And remember, I'm here for you. And I have great friends who I'm sure would be there for you too."

"Jack?" Katherine said, gaining his attention. They were cuddled up together on the couch.
"What's up Ace?"
"I don't mean to be pushy or anything but... there seemed to be something that you and Ari weren't telling me. I guess I just want to know, did anything happen between you too?"
"What? Ari? No way!" Jack said, laughing. Katherine still looked suspicious. Jack didn't want to tell her about Ari. What would he do if Katherine told Davey? But still, he hated lying to her.
"Jack I know there's something you're not telling me." Jack sighed.
"Alright, I'll tell ya, but this has to stay between us, 'kay?" Katherine modded. "The truth is, Davey and Ari used to date a year back." Katherine's jaw dropped.
"Wha- why didn't you tell me?" She asked. Jack sighed.
"When Ari left, Davey kinda shut down. He wouldn't speak to any of us for a month, he would barely even eat. I'm worried what might happen to him if he finds out she's back in town," Jack finished.
"Your secrets safe with me."
"For sure?"
"For sure."
