Chapter 6: Matthew Espinosa

"You shouldn't have brought her here." I hear. "You shouldn't even be here!"

"I know but they were going to kill her...I couldn't let them do that...not to a pretty girl like her." I hear a low growl and then the second voice quickly say, "Sorry."

"That is my best friend Matt." Crawford? I slowly open my eyes and see I'm in Crawford's room. I slowly turn my head to see Crawford with his back to me talking to a tall brunette haired guy. The mysterious guy has a cute baby face that currently is home to a frown. He is wearing a red hoodie and jeans complete with black Nike's.

"Kian is going to kill you when he finds out you were near his sister." Crawford says.

"I know he is mad at me for leaving but I am back, I don't want them to kill Kenzie anymore than you do Craws." Matt says.

"Why would they kill me again?" I ask causing the two boys to look at me. I sit up and gasp noticing that Matt is the guy from last night, his chocolate eyes give it away.

"Kenzie! How are you feeling?" Crawford is immediately at my side.

"Tired. Like I've been shot at." I slightly smile. "Who is he?" I look at matt.

"I'm Matthew Espinosa. But you can call me Matt." he says smiling at me. I feel my cheeks heat up at his smile.

"Nice to meet you." I say.

"Where is she!?" We hear someone scream. I wince realizing its my brother. We hear pounding footsteps up the stairs and the bedroom door slams open almost hitting Matt.

"Kenzie!?" Kians tall figure steps into the room followed by Chris and Connor.

"Kian!" to be honest I'm a bit relieved as Kian throws his arms around me holding me protectively.

"I heard they kidnapped you and tried to kill you! I'm so sorry I didn't wake up to stop them!" Kian says. What is he talking about? I glance at Crawford and Matt over Kians shoulder. Crawford gives me a look telling me to just go along with it.

"Yes, it was horrible." I say hugging my brother tighter.

"Don't worry I'm here now. They won't touch you." Kian says pulling away and looking into my eyes trying to reassure me. I nod and he turns to Matt.

"Why did you save her?" his voice goes from concerned to cold. Well crap.

"You think I'd let them kill her? Kian you know me better than that." Matt says looking hurt.

"I don't know you at all after you left me to join the other side." Kians voice makes the room seem colder than it is.

"I got scared man. You were doing reckless things with the gang!" Matt protests.

"I should knock your teeth out right now." Kians fist clenches.

"No!" I shoot out of the bed and in front of matt.

"Kenzie, don't defend this traitor." Kian says still glaring at Matt.

"He saved my life Kian....you wouldn't hurt someone who almost got shot saving your baby sister would you?" I give him my puppy dog eyes knowing he can't resist.

"You almost got shot saving Kenzie?" Kians face softens a bit.

"I told you when I first met Kenzie I would take a bullet to protect her." Matt softly says.

"Back then it had another meaning..." Kians eyes narrow.

"It still does." Matt says.

"YOU ASSHOLE!"Kian shoves me aside and lunges as Matt.

I cry out as I hit the floor hitting my head. My vision goes blurry as I see Chris and Connor grab my brother holding him back and Crawford rushes to my side.

"Kenzie!" Crawford kneels next to me pulling me into his arms protectively. I hold on tightly to Crawford as tears threaten to spill out of my eyes. My brother just hurt me. I watch as Kian struggles against Hus friends to get to Matt who stands there calmly.

How can he stand there calmly when my brother could break free at any minute and try to kill him!? Also what did he mean he would take a bullet for me? What is going on?

"Kian stop!" I say slowly pushing myself from Crawford's arms and getting up.

"Kenzie, stay out of this." Kian doesn't even look at me.

"I said stop!" and before I can stop myself, my open palm connects with the side of my brothers face.

"What the hell Kenzie!?" Kian looks hurt, but calmer.

"You just shoved me to the ground to hit Matt, who may I remind you, saved my life!" I shake my head.

"I didn't mean to shove you." Kian softly says.

"Just leave me alone Kian." I say turning g to walk out of the room, but not before grabbing Matt's hand. "Come along Matt. Its my turn to save your life."

Matt quickly follows and we leave Crawford's house, where I turn to him, hands on my hips.

"You wanna explain what that was about?" I ask.

"Its not safe for us to talk here. Meet me at the bridge at 5." Matt says before walking away.

"Oh and Kenzie?" he turns.

"Yeah?"

"Try not to get shot at."
