Chapter Forty Nine: Visiting Hours

Jude woke up in a hospital bed. He looked around to see the white roof and walls. He was hooked up to two iv drips. He heard his heart monitor beeping and he looked to his right to see bouquets of flowers and a sleeping girl. This was his girlfriend Paige.

He smiled as he looked at her. He silently cursed at himself. He knew this was a pain that was unbearable for her. He was dying and they only started dating less than a week ago. He didn't like the thought of leaving her either. The door opened to reveal a nurse walking in.

"Hello handsome." Jude silently said to himself as he looked at the nurse. "Mister Hathaway, we have some friends here to see you."

"Okay." Jude said in a raspy voice. He gently shook Paige to wake her up. She stirred as saw Jude smiling at her. She got up and hugged him with tears in her eyes.

"Sorry for scaring you like that Paige." Jude said as he used one of his arms to hug her back. She refused to let him go as if it was his last day on earth. At that moment Jude didn't care.

"Hey man." Jace said as he walked in with Johnny, Vanessa and Lars.

"Where are the others?" Jude asked. "They're setting up one hell of a concert in your honor." Johnny said with a smile. Weird.

"Yeah, Aqua Weasle and ShockWave broke up and the remnants of both bands formed a new band in your honor Jude." Vanessa informed the bedridden teen.

"Really? What's the name?" Jude asked out of curiosity. "Sorry man, we don't know. The don't wanna tell us until the concert." Lars answered him putting him in a room of disappointment.

"So how long did the doctors say I have left to live?" Jude asked out of the blue making them all look at each other with worried faces. He knew it was very bad thanks to Paige's hug.

"So a day huh? Lemme guess, I have until midnight if I'm lucky?" He saw their looks worsen, as if he hit it on the dot. "Figured this would happen. I'm just glad you guys came here to visit."

Jude got surprised when Melody popped by. "Hey Jude, how you holding up?"

"Surprisingly well. I'm sure you heard the wonderful news."

"Yeah, I'm sorry about that. Hey, at least you can look at the bright side, now you're not gonna die a virgin." This shocked Jude. He looked at Paige before saying, "You told them?"

"We kinda listened in when you guys were fucking each other that day. Sorry." Jace said sheepishly.

"Okay, you guys are total assholes." Jude told his friends with a smile before the nurse came back in with Jude's breakfast. Jude sat up so that he could eat. He was a bit disgusted since he hated hospital food. But he sucked it up, after all... beggars can't be choosers.

The nurse left and Jay appeared asking, "Who's nurse handsome?"

"I don't know. I'd try to flirt with him but I have a girlfriend who I'm madly in love with." Jude answered Jay. Paige just climbed into bed with Jude so she could snuggle up against him.

"So I can go after him right?" Jay asked before Vanessa commented telling him, "You can try, but I think he's straight."

"Wanna bet?" Jay asked before the two ran out of the room chasing down the nurse.

"Why's Jay and Vanessa running after a nurse?" Bailey asked as she entered the room.

"To see if he's gay or straight." Paige said before Jude nodded. "Hey sis, I thought you weren't gonna show up." Jude greeted his little sister before she fake laughed.

"You say that as if I wouldn't visit my brother on his last day." Bailey said. "Is mom and dad coming?" He asked before she had a look of regret. Jude instantly picked it up and scowled.

"I have one day left to live and they can't even drop work to visit their dying son. Why am I even surprised?"

"What do you mean?" Paige asked in curiosity as Jude revealed that his parents were never around for him.

"I'm an adopted kid. I didn't even know who my parents were. The Hathaways got me from an orphanage because they couldn't have kids. It then changed when my mom was pregnant with Bailey.

My parents grew cold and distant to me and they started neglecting me. I chose to be self sufficient. Although they don't give a crap about me anymore, I still care about them." Jude explained.

Bailey was shocked to find out that she and Jude weren't really related but the look of shock on her face quickly turned into a scowl for her parents.

Bailey then left the room to make a quick phone call. She had to go to the roof to make that phone call since she knew she'd be screaming and that's not allowed in the hospital.

Paige just embraced her now saddened boyfriend. She wasn't planning on letting him go. Not at all. All she did was sob at the fact that he had a lonely life and that he had less than a day left to live now. Nobody in the from saw it, but a tear of genuine sadness escaped Jude's eye.
