They finally let me walk around. I was so restless with my thoughts that I would wander the halls for hours to entertain myself. I talked to a few of the residents in the ward but they never stayed long to create a friendship. After the first few days I knew the layout of the building like the back of my hand. He doctors never allowed me in the back rooms but that doesn't mean I never went into them.
I'm small and fast ya suckers.
One of the rooms I wasn't allowed into peaked my curiosity. It was a normal long-term ward room but very few doctors were allowed inside. I would keep an eye on the times and durations doctors would be inside and I made a game plan to entertain myself. At around noon one day after the normal doctor left I crept around the corner. They never locked the door but there was a sign next to the room saying who was permitted to enter. What really snagged my attention to the room was Lucy was on that list.
When the doctor walked off away from me I silently crept to the door and soundlessly opened it. I softly closed it behind me before standing up straight. I turned to the occupant of the bed and was taken back a bit.
White curly hair was sprawled out all over the pillow. There face was gray but seemed pale. They did not look peaceful at all. Most people say those in comas look relaxed but this looked more like a mental fight. I stepped towards the bed and picked up the clip board on the small table near the bed.
' Thanatos Morgan Beeldreff '
There male, I couldn't tell at first glance. I scanned the papers not reading into them to much. It wasn't until the second page that my attention was stolen.
'Works as Death at 'The Afterlife building' , client priority: Imperative.
Horsemen Of The Apocalypse : The Pale Rider, Death'
I did a double take and nearly dropped the clipboard. This guy was the big scary death? Lucy's good friend? The guy everyone was working overtime to cover? AND HES AN ACTUAL HORSEMEN LIKE PESTILENCE?!
He seems... a lot less scary then I expected.
I kept reading.
' many sever injuries sustained, all small wounds have healed and any lacerations are showing slow improvement. Lasting injury to chest due to Hellblazer. '
My heart jumped and I put the clip board down. I took a deep breath and tried to calm down.
I've been on the sharp side of that blade. I still have scars from it.
That's Lucy's sword.
The door clicked open from behind me and I jumped out of my skin. I didn't have time to hide by the time the door was opened and I was face to face with the person who entered the room.
Say the devils name and she shall appear.... and she was not happy to see me.
If happy was a sense of pure bliss and calm then she was the exact opposite. Her tail ignited and once again I jumped.
"DEVIN?! How did you get in here?!" I raised a hand to make an argument but quickly discovered I did not have said argument. I let out a dumb, flabbergasted noise which only enraged her further.
"Get. Out"
She left zero room for argument and I didn't even want to try and find room to breath. Holding my breath, I kept my head low as she held the door open for me.
"We will discuss this later." Her Mama tone was strong as ever and I was like a little ant under her steel toed high heel.
After the door closed I quickly walked back to my own room. I crawled up on the bed and sat with my legs crossed. I twiddled my thumbs and awaited my imminent death.
Hehe. No puns intended.
Shut up Devin your about to die.
I literally sat and waited for about 15 minuets in pure silence before the door swung open. Lucy walked in seeming much calmer then before. I was very much relieved by that fact. Wen she looked to me I could see her eyes were a little puffy. I hoped I wasn't the reason for those tears.
"Devin... sorry I got that angry." She walked to the bed and climbed on it with me. She sat mimicking my siting position.
"No, I shouldn't have gone in there anyways." I put my head down. I made her really mad. That's not okay. She's done to much for me for me to do that shit.
"That's correct but..." she sighed. "I should have probably told you about him more anyways. I just don't enjoy remembering he's in here. It makes me sad."
It was silent for a long moment.
"What happened to him?" The words felt wrong coming out but Lucy gave a small smile.
"I stabbed him. Almost two years ago."
"I heard that's bad for people's health." She chuckled a bit at that. "Your sword bites hard."
"Yeah, it does. I'm sure you remember that."
"Far to well." The small bit of humor in the air dropped to the floor and disappeared. "Why did you do it?"
"He lost control of his demons and his mind got twisted back to how it was during the war. He was going to probably start another war or at least be a very big problem for the higher ups and I couldn't just... watch him go back to that." Her head bobbed down a bit and I reached out to take her hand. She let me.
"It's okay. I'm sure he will get better eventually." We both were aware these words didn't really have a meaning.
"I can't stay patient. I can only bear to wait for so long."
"I know..."
"I just want him around again. Not just because of the work load but because I just want, him. I want him to meet all the new people I know now as friends. I want him to meet you." She looked up at me and I saw a trace of tears. My heart exploded into pieces at the sight.
The world is cruelest to the people who never deserve it.
"I'm not that amazing of a person to meet Lucy."
"Trust me, neither is he. He's a big mess but he's a big mess who I love dearly." She looked down again. "A while ago I realized how similar the two of you can be and I guess that's one reason I made a connection to you so quickly. Among other things."
"Similar? How so."
"Your demons are far stronger then you."
Another moment of silence passed. I wanted to argue about that fact but with recent events I have zero points to prove her wrong. I've always bent to the whim of my thoughts. That's why I'm so... well... a mess.
"We, we will all get through it..."
"Yeah. That's the hope."
"Not a hope, a goal." She looked up at me. A soft smile covered her face and she leaned forwards and placed a kiss on my bandages forehead. She ruffled he hair before pulling away and sliding off the bed.
"Get some sleep, you need to get out of here so I can make you a big meal with real food." A larger smile shone on me and it was contagious.
"Sounds delicious."
"I'll stop by tomorrow again. Try and stay out of rooms you shouldn't be in this time." She chuckled a bit again and I waved as she closed the door behind her.
