Chapter 9 : Meet Owen

A nice day in the jungle of Nublar. All is quiet. Suddenly a pig screamed and ran. It wasn't running for nothing. Six big raptors were chasing before being stopped before a cross-shaped structure above their head. Each of these raptors had a different color.

On the said cross – a man stood with his wrist in a 'Stop' position and every raptor stopped. Five raptors looked at the man minus one which seemed tired. « Blue ! Blue ! Eyes on me ! » he said. Blue ended up raising her head. A green raptor started getting angry. « Charlie ! Charlie ! Don't give me that shit ! ». The man saw a dark green one getting distracted. « Golf ! Calm down ! ».

The three others remained calm and focused. « Echo ! Delta ! Foxtrot ! Very good ! ». The handler walked on the catwalk – still watching his raptors and clicking with his clicker. « Alright move up ! » he said after all of the raptors were now focused. Arriving at a bucket – he yelled 'Stop !'. « Good ! It's damn good ! » he said. He then gave a rat to each of them after putting the clicker in his pocket. « Go ! » he said after giving them rats.

Many people saw this exercise. An African man – wearing a pink shirt and grey pants – approached the handler to congratulate him as did a little girl wearing a red hoodie and blue jeans.

« Owen ! Owen ! I congratulate you ! We're making progress. », « Thanks Barry ! ». A portly man then approached the man now named Owen. « Hey – Crocodile Dundee ! Come here so I can embrace you ! », « Who's there ! Victor Hoskins – Head of Security. Why you here Colonel ? », « About your toothed birds ! Are they ready for the show ? ».

Barry stood there silent. Vic and Owen then started to discuss about raptors. « I wouldn't be that hasty – man. They obey but aren't 100% ready. », « It's a trust relationship between man and raptors. Exactly what Masrani wanted. », « They trust me – Barry and Maisie. Nobody else. We still gotta wait until they can trust someone else apart from the three of us. ». The three men then walked down the stairs and the little girl followed.

« I'd like to say what you think. But Masrani wants results. Not trials. », « He's gonna have his result. But Owen handles this mission. Not him. He just sits in his office in India and once the year is finished – he just has a lazy life in one of his villas. He doesn't understand an animal needs time to adapt to a new environment. Owen handled animals for military forces and for several animal parks. », « That's why he got hired – right ? », « Yes – but the kid's right. The animal I've dealt with are known by mankind for centuries. Unlike raptors – which are malicious and dangerous animals. », « You underestimate yourself – man. I've seen InGen hunters being eaten as Ajay Sidhu was yelling 'Don't get into the long grass !' », « If I say they're not ready – they're not ready ! », « OK ! However – Owen – good job. What are your animals' names ? », « I inspired myself from my Australian Army experience. The blue-feathered one is Blue – the light green one is Charlie – the brown one is Echo – the dark blue one is Delta – the grey one is Golf and the orange one is Foxtrot. », « Indeed. You're explicitly refering to US and Australian Armies. »

Indeed. Before being appointed Head of Security by InGen administration – Hoskins was an officer in the US Army 82nd Airborne Division. He served in Panama – Operation Desert Storm – Rwanda and Bosnia. After resigning from the 'All Americans' – he became a bounty hunter before being involved in Operation Harvest. He was among the very few survivors. His appointment was mainly caused by his competencies to handle hard situations.

Owen Grady was born in the Australian outback and was raised in a family of farmers. He started to handle dogs at the age of 10 to help the family. He then enlisted at age 17 in the Australian Army and was involved in Afghanistan until he retired from the Army at age 27 – after a bullet injury sustained in Helmand province. After this – he worked at countless animal theme parks and marine animal parks before being recruited by InGen as he was famous for handling any animal he would be given care of – as stated in the Guinness World Record books.

The two of them therefore knew the names of the raptors were refering to NATO alphabet.

A young beanie-wearing man then ran on the catwalk. « Pig loose ! » he yelled. He then tried to grab the pig with a pole. But Echo grabbed the pig and pulled the boy and the pole into the raptor pen. « Barry – the door ! ». Barry pressed a button to open the door cage. Two guards were ready to shoot. « No ! No ! No ! Don't shoot ! Do not shoot ! Put twelve amps into these animals and they will never trust me again. ». Owen then distracted the animals so they would focus on him and not the boy. The five carnivores did so.

« Calm down – girls ! Stay where you are ! ». Then Owen wispered to the boy to sneak past the gate. What was done. Owen rushed to the gate and Barry closed it. The raptor chased him unsuccessfully. They were now ready to bite and snarling.

« Are you the rookie ? », « Yes – sir. », « Did you wonder why the employment was free ? Don't answer. I swear – the InGen HR services. I gotta tell them a thing or two. At least you learnt to stay sharp when near the raptors. », « Tu aurais dû les laisser le bouffer. » Barry said laughing. Owen chuckled and turned to Hoskins. « See. They don't even trust rookies. Just me, Barry and Owen. » the little girl named Maisie said. Hoskins was baffled about what happened but also seemed confident.

Meanwhile – a helicopter carrying Dr. Carter and USAMRIID Dr. Guitterez landed on the USS Lexington. The scientists exited the navalized Blackhawk and saluted Admiral Shane before the two headed to the command post.

« Thanks for coming – Dr. Guitterez and Dr. Carter. », « No problem. », « What news about that new disease ? », « The safest places to develop an antidote is your ship and the USAMRIID HQ. », « I see. Help yourself – Doctors. », « Thanks – Admiral. ». They then headed to the carrier lab and Drs. Guitterez and Carter set themselves – ready to work.
