The next day was even worse than the previous. Elizabeth's fingers were terribly blistered, but she still would finish ahead of the other girls, as she pushed the pain to the back of her mind. Mrs. Walker would come over and undo her work so that she was forced to do it again, and every time, Elizabeth would grit her teeth and throw herself into redoing whatever it was they were working on, such as sticking IVs, wrapping bandages, doing stitches, setting 'bones.'

Towards the end of the day, Sarah had noticed that Elizabeth's fingers were bleeding, and she raised her hand.

"Yes, Ms. Fieldman?" Mrs. Walker said.

"I'm sorry, but I couldn't help but notice that Ms. Rogers fingers are bleeding. Don't you think that she should get them looked at?"

"Well now," Mrs. Walker turned and looked over at Elizabeth, who was trying to wipe the blood off on her skirt. "Do you need a break, Ms. Rogers?"

"No ma'am," Elizabeth said, gritting her teeth, determined not to show the woman how upset she was.

"Then back to work Ms. Rogers. And you too, Ms. Fieldman," she said, spinning and going to the front of the class. "Forty-five minutes left today, girls! Let's not give in to whining and complaining, now!"

The remaining time seemed to stretch on forever, but finally, the girls were released from work. Elizabeth stood to go, but Mrs. Walker stopped her from leaving.

"Not you, Ms. Rogers," she said. Sarah looked over at Elizabeth, hesitating to leave her friend alone with the teacher. Elizabeth waved her on, and she left the room. Even the teacher's assistant had left.

"Yes, Mrs. Walker?" Elizabeth asked. She raked her brain for any clue as to what she had done to be pulled aside.

"Your work has improved in this past week, and very admirably, might I add. I'd like you to come and shadow me at the hospital in Brooklyn tonight. It will be a practical experience for you," she said.

Elizabeth's eyes widened. An opportunity to go and put her skills to use at the hospital would be an excellent experience.

"Really?" She asked.

"Yes. You'll be able to better understand and do your work efficiently."

"Thank you so much," Elizabeth replied.

"Hospital, eight o'clock to midnight this evening. I expect that this will not affect your learning tomorrow morning?"

"Not at all, ma'am. I'll be sure to be there early."

"Good. Now get out of my sight," Mrs. Walker shooed Elizabeth out the door. Elizabeth exited, trying to compose herself as they exited the building.

"What was that all about?" Sarah asked her as they turned down the street.

"I'm going to the hospital to shadow her tonight!" Elizabeth exclaimed. Sarah gasped and clapped her hands.

"Oh my goodness, Lizzie! That's dynamite. I really thought she was going to chew you out there for a moment," Sarah beamed. "You know, I heard the other girls talking the other day, and they said sometimes girls get to be promoted if they're real good at being a nurse."

"Really? No, I don't think that-" she trailed off and thought about it for a second.

"Go on home and rest up, I'll come and get you tomorrow morning in case you sleep late," Sarah called, racing off to her apartment.

Elizabeth turned and went up the steps and to the apartment, swinging the door open to reveal Bucky and Steve sitting down on the couch solemnly together, but Elizabeth could just barely make them out as she raced in and to her bedroom.
