"So in the year that I've been gone, you moved out of the Avengers Facility, did a few hundred missions, and you suddenly got weighed down with this whole Accords thing?" Elizabeth shook her head, it was a lot to wrap her mind around.
"It was a pretty intense year, and now with Peggy gone, I-" Steve took a deep breath.
The whole lunch had filled with moments like these. The group would talk about normal things, then everyone would get quiet, remembering the real reason they had been brought together. Elizabeth checked her watch, realizing that it was one minute until she had to check in with Bucky.
"If you'll excuse me for a minute," she suddenly said, standing from the table. She made her way towards the bathrooms and flipped open one of the two burner phones Bucky and her had purchased before she had left Romania. Bucky had the other one, and no doubt had turned it on, waiting for her call.
She turned on the phone and pressed the key to speed dial Bucky's burner. She lifted it up to her ear and listened while it rang. The ringing stopped, and she heard someone breathing into the phone.
"Buck?" She asked quietly.
"Lizzie," he replied, his voice crackling through the phone. There were a couple of seconds of silence before he spoke again. "How is he?"
Elizabeth's eyes wandered over to the table where Steve was sitting with Sam and Sharon and she sighed.
"He'll be okay, but I think I'll be here for a couple more days. I'll be home soon," she said. "How have you been?"
She didn't realize that she had called the tiny apartment that they shared their 'home.' But Bucky heard it, and he smiled to himself before speaking up.
"It's hard to sleep without you, Lizzie, but other than that I'm okay. I can't wait to see you, doll," he said.
"I can't wait to see you either," she replied. She noticed that Sharon was looking at her, and she spoke quickly. "I have to go."
"Okay. Call tomorrow. Same time," Bucky said.
"I will," Elizabeth replied before hanging the phone up quickly and taking a deep breath. She made her way back to the table and took her place next to Steve.
They stayed there, talking for another hour before deciding it was finally time to part ways. Steve decided he wanted to walk Sharon back to her hotel, so Sam and Elizabeth stayed back. They reached the hotel lobby, and something on the television lobby caught Sam's eye.
"Holy shit," he muttered to himself, stopping where he was walking. Elizabeth looked up at the television screen where there was an explosion on the screen from the UN Conference in Vienna. Elizabeth's eyes were glued to the screen.
"Get Steve," Elizabeth said, her eyes not once leaving the screen. She watched as a reporter ran from the explosion all while yelling into the camera. Her eyes were glued to the screen when Steve laid a hand on her shoulder.
"Come on, we're going upstairs," he said, motioning to the gathering crowd. A huge number of people were watching the television. Elizabeth was pulled through the crowd and to the elevator. The ride up to the top was silent, with Sharon pulling out her phone to call someone.
They entered into Sharon's hotel room, where she immediately went over and grabbed the remote, turning the television on. The reports were swarming in with imagery of the burning UN. Elizabeth stood beside Steve and Sam, all watching the television, ignoring Sharon talking on the phone in the background.
"A bomb hidden in a news van ripped through the UN building in Vienna. More than 70 people have been injured. At least 12 are dead, including Wakanda's King T'Chaka. Officials have released a video of a suspect who they have identified as James Buchanan Barnes..."
