Elizabeth woke to hear shouts from outside the camp. Still clothed in her pajamas, she slipped on her shoes and raced outside. She spotted Anita racing out from the hospital and met her friend, who explained that the 107th had returned.
Elizabeth had told Anita about Bucky, and Anita was thrilled that there was another person from their hometown in the camp. Elizabeth raced out to spot the vehicles coming up the road. She saw people being unloaded from stretchers, and she prayed that Bucky wasn't one of them.
The nurses surged forward, and Elizabeth followed suit, despite the fact that she was still clothed in her pajamas. She ignored the looks she got and began to assist who she could until suddenly, she laid her eyes on Bucky.
He seemed unscathed, but he was visibly upset and strained. She made her way over to him and grabbed onto his arm, wanting to make sure that he was uninjured. She only had a split second to realize her mistake before he pinned her down to the ground.
"Bucky, it's me," she coughed, the wind completely knocked out of her.
"Elizabeth!" He pursed his lips. "Don't sneak up on me."
"I'm sorry, I was just worried about you," she said quietly, standing up on her own. He was completely distracted, his eyes glazed over. Elizabeth touched his hand gently, trying to provide him some comfort before she had to leave, but he rejected it.
"Go help the wounded," he ordered, giving her a hard shove away from him. Elizabeth furrowed her brows before turning and going towards the field hospital. She had been worried about him, and he came back only to push her away. She made her way into the field hospital to help wherever she could.
All night she worked, despite the fact that she had worked earlier in the day. Elizabeth found herself bandaging the wounded and marking and tagging the dead. They were lucky to have so few dead, but the sounds in the tent from the wounded were horrifying.
At dawn, Elizabeth was ordered back to bed by Dr. Jerry, so she turned to leave the field hospital.
There was rain coming down heavily, so she looked out at her path before making a dash to the women's quarters. Just before she left the tent, she spotted Bucky sitting by himself, his head in his hands, water soaking him through.
Elizabeth felt bad for him while at the same time angry at him, but the exhaustion allowed for the anger to outweigh her sympathy. She marched over to him, ignoring the rain that washed over her, her eyes blazing with fury. Bucky looked up and hardly had enough time to react before she slapped him.
"What the hell, James Buchanan Barnes!?" She practically yelled as he stood, clutching his face in shock and anger.
"Excuse me? What was that for?" He asked, getting in her face.
"Oh, that was warranted," she spat back. "You leave for over a week, longer than you were supposed to, and left me to worry. Then you come back and treat me like dirt when all I wanted was to make sure that you were okay?"
"I was obviously distracted with what was going on in my platoon," Bucky defended himself.
"God, Bucky, I was so worried, and you didn't even care. Do you even care? Because I do, and I was terrified that I had lost you." Elizabeth's eyes were watering, words just spewing out of her mouth.
It was a sight to see, the young nurse chewing out the soldier. She was still in her pajamas, which were heavily stained with blood, her hair and clothes were now soaked, clinging tightly to her small frame. He was in his fatigues, also soaked through to the bone.
"Of course I care, doll," he gave in quietly, running his hand through his short, wet hair.
"Then let me check you over, please?" She choked out, trying to wipe the water and tears off of her face before placing her hands on her hips. He gave in to her, allowing her to lead him into the field hospital tent. Avoiding Dr. Jerry, since she knew he would scold her from coming back, she led Bucky to one of the exam stations and pulled the curtain shut around them.
