"Right this way, ladies," a woman's voice boomed over her loudspeaker. Elizabeth and Anita found themselves heading towards a line of vehicles destined to take them to the field hospital. The girls were all dressed in their uniforms, making it difficult to determine who was who.

The men driving the vehicles all scanned the women, clearly making eyes at the ones who they deemed 'attractive' in their minds.

"If I get whistled at-" Anita whispered, feeling herself being scanned by one of the men.

"I'll back you up," Elizabeth snorted, clutching a little tighter to her small suitcase.

They were loaded up in a vehicle, and within the hour they found themselves at the camp. They exited the cars and trucks to see the large scale of the encampment. Elizabeth looked around at all the men's quarters while they were led away from them and to the field hospital and the women's quarters.

There were two enclosed tents, and in each tent, there were ten beds. The women were divided into two separate groups, one being led to the tent furthest away, and the other being led to the closest tent. Elizabeth and Anita followed the second group, going to the nearest tent. They bent over a little to get under the flap of the tent that was being held open for them. Elizabeth and Anita quickly grabbed the two closest to the hospital, setting their bags down underneath their cots.

"Alright ladies, let's give you the tour, shall we?" One of the head nurses shouted. She led them around the camp, pointing out the men's quarters, the field hospital, and the mess hall. She then brought them to the hospital, where there were a few nurses, who were clearly overworked, were running around helping out the few men who were placed on cots.

There was a list posted with the women's names that noted what days and times they would be working.

"You ladies had better memorize your time tables. If you are late more than once, you will be dismissed from the program and shipped home. You will do as you are told, and you will do it right, is this understood?" The woman called. The other ten women had joined Elizabeth's group.

"Yes, ma'am!" They all said back.

"Now, I will also remind you that there is to be no fraternizing with the soldiers whatsoever. Is this understood?"

"Yes, ma'am!" They all said. A couple of girls sighed and giggled to themselves about the idea.

"Now, some of you start with the first shift tonight. Others begin their shift tomorrow morning. Until then, you are all dismissed to return to your quarters until dinner at 6 PM!"

The girls all gathered around the timetables, scanning to see if they had to work the night shift. Luckily, Elizabeth was not on the list. Unfortunately, Anita was.

"Rotten luck," Elizabeth said as they each wrote down their schedules in their small notebooks before replacing them in their breast pocket.

"I know," Anita moaned. "No rest for the weary- or the traveler."

The two girls returned to their tent to rest up before dinner.

That first night was pretty uneventful, with very little happening, other than the men gawking at the women as if they had never seen a woman before. Elizabeth decided to go to sleep early before her early morning shift.

She was restless that night, hearing people walking around outside, and the girls whispering in the tent. She heard that one of the platoons had returned from fighting on the frontlines, and she knew that there would plenty of injured patients the next morning.

"Nurse Rogers!" A voice came from behind Elizabeth. It was the first hour of her first shift, and she had already redressed two men's bandages and set someone's leg.
