The fact that Elizabeth had killed someone didn't hit her until late that night.
The team had returned to the main base in triumph, everyone cheering her on. One of the main camp doctors took a look at her ear and sewed up what was left of the top of her ear. They all ate lunch together before taking time for a debriefing together.
Elizabeth was included in all of the high-security information, and she knew that it was an incredible honor. She listened intently, despite the ringing that was still present in her right ear.
After the debriefing, Elizabeth elected to go straight to bed. She was exhausted from staying up all night and day, and she practically fell down to her bed. As soon as her head hit the pillow, she was asleep.
For the first few hours, she slept peacefully until later in the evening when she began to dream.
Elizabeth opened her eyes and looked up at the stars. She was back, hiding in the bush, waiting for the men to return. Suddenly she heard thudding, and she grabbed her gun, standing and looking behind her. In the clearing, there were three bodies. Their blood ran towards her like a swiftly flowing river. She stepped back, out of the blood-riddled snow, then, one by one, the bodies stood up. The began to follow her, and she backed away.
"Why did you kill us?"
"There was no need, frauline."
"I guess now we have to kill you."
Elizabeth turned and began to run, but they were faster and stronger than her. She was overtaken by them and pinned to the ground, their blood still coming out from where she had shot them. One to the head, two to the chest.
She was drowning in it, drowning in their blood.
"Please, I'm sorry, please!" She screamed before the blood consumed her.
Elizabeth woke up, sitting up straight in her cot, her sweat slick on her skin. Once she regained her senses, she stood and slipped on her shoes before wandering out of her quarters that she shared with her brother, who was snoring lightly in his cot.
She stumbled out into the clearing, where it had begun to snow. Her breath was still heavy, but soon she had cooled off, but still, she remained out of the protection of the tent, allowing the snow to fall around her.
After a short minute, she finally slowed her breathing, beginning to shake off the nightmare.
"What are you doing out here in the cold?" A familiar voice drifted over to her. It was Steve.
"Can't sleep," she replied.
"Your ear bothering you?"
"No, it's not that," Elizabeth sighed.
Steve approached her, pulling her into a hug. He knew what was bothering her. He remembered the first time he killed someone, even though it was a Hydra agent, it was still a human.
"Does it ever get easier?" She asked.
"Not really," Steve sighed, wishing that he could give her more comforting words. "They all stick with you."
"How can you even sleep at night?" Elizabeth asked, pulling away from her brother.
"I'm too exhausted not to," Steve shrugged, looking down at Elizabeth. He squeezed her shoulders before turning and pulling her back to their quarters, where he sat with her while she drifted back off to sleep.

The next few months waged on, with Elizabeth following Steve and the Howling Commandos. They had quickly learned that while she was an excellent healer and a decent fighter, she was absolutely terrible at being discreet and hiding for extended periods of time.
