Elizabeth's heels clicked down the nearly-deserted street. She had half a mind to rip them off, but she was practically back at the apartment. She pulled out the spare key from her bag before entering the building. She made her way up the stairs as quickly as she could, looking down at her watch.
The time read 4:30 AM, and Elizabeth sighed. Her flight had been delayed on the runway by nearly two hours, and she was exasperated with it all. She had tried to call Bucky almost ten times, but he hadn't responded.
She fumbled with her key at the door, opening it to reveal an empty apartment. Elizabeth rushed in, kicking her heels off, and looking into the bathroom. Bucky was nowhere to be found.
"Come on," she whispered, peering out at the tiny balcony. Still, no Bucky. She went around to the kitchen to see if he was hiding from her for some reason, but he wasn't there. Her eyes wandered around the place when they landed on the burner cell phone. It lay shut beside the bed, turned completely off.
"Come on!" She shouted, kicking the island cabinets with her bare foot. A shooting pain ran up her leg from her toe, but she ignored it. She took a deep breath and looked over the apartment. There were no signs of a struggle, and his bed was unmade as if he had slept there recently.
"Perhaps he's out somewhere," she said to herself, trying to think logically. She looked down at her watch. She knew that if Bucky had fled, he would be completely off the grid and untraceable, and if he hadn't, then he would be home soon.
She took a deep breath and decided that there was nothing that she could do until either he or the CIA arrived, so she stripped down and got into the shower, rinsing off quickly in hopes of passing the time. Within minutes she had showered, and she had put on a new set of clothing, better suited to going on the run.
She began to pace, checking her watch. It was a few minutes past five. Finally, it occurred to her to check for his go bag. She went over to the floorboards where she knew it was placed and she lifted them up, peeking inside. It was still there. She plopped down to the floor and thought for a moment, trying to place a finger on where he might have gone.
"Where does he normally go if he wakes up early in the morning?" She asked herself. "The market."
She whipped out a piece of paper and pen and hastily scribbled a note in case Bucky arrived before she did before she slipped on some sneakers and ran out the apartment, shutting and locking the door firmly behind her.
She raced out into the street. It was already beginning to fill up with early morning risers as the sun had already started to rise. She walked from place to place for a few hours, trying to figure out where he had gone when she finally gave up, heading back to the apartment. That's when she saw them. There were military officials clearing out the apartment building.
"No," she said. She was too late. She ran towards the building, pushing away one of the officers who was trying to keep her away, and she ran for the door.
That was when the explosions happened. Followed by gunfire.
"Get out of the way!" One of the officers shouted, pulling Elizabeth back from the building. Elizabeth prayed that Bucky would make it out alive, and she turned and ran back into the crowd. She had written for him to meet her in their secret location, and she hoped he had had the chance to read it.
Elizabeth ran around the corner just in time to see someone jumping from the apartment building to another, and she knew it was Bucky. She continued to look up to watch the action. Someone else jumped out of the apartment, a glint of metal coming off of a round disk. She realized who it was. It was Steve.
She continued down the block, making her way towards the meeting location when suddenly she looked up to see Bucky dropping down from the building, followed by a man in a catsuit.
