At the hospital, Elizabeth had been given a patch to put over her eye lens in order to block out the extra stimulus that continued to feed her Hydra's information. She was finally allowed to process things normally, like a human instead of a machine.
Soon after Elizabeth was released from the hospital, she found herself being led through the Avengers Tower. It was all absolutely huge. She couldn't wrap her head around the extravagance of the whole place.
She found herself being led down a few floors to where she would have her own room. She noted that unlike almost all the other rooms, hers didn't have a balcony, and it seemed to be in the middle, between Steve's apartment and the assassin, Natasha's apartment. Steve showed her to the training facilities, the workout space, the kitchen, and a whole list of many other things.
It was all overwhelming for her, so she soon found herself asking to be left alone to her own thoughts. She sat alone in her large room, for a few days, with only Steve coming to bring her food in order to check on her.
Every time he visited her, she seemed deep in thought, and he would simply leave the food on the table beside the chair that she sat in, unmoving. She stared out over the city, watching the sunrise, the sunset, and all the planes traveling through. The routines of the different Avengers, it all seemed so strange to her.
Finally, after four days of no sleep, she decided to leave the room. She exited the apartment and entered into the elevator, taking it up to the main area of the house, with the kitchen, the terrace, and the living room.
She found Steve up there with Tony Stark, the man who had built the building. They both looked up from their seats on the couch when she entered the floor. Her eye wavered between the two of them before suddenly Tony cracked a joke.
"Wow, she really does remind me of Nick Fury with that eye patch."
Elizabeth frowned in confusion as she looked back and forth between the two men.
"Who is Nick Fury?" She asked, not understanding the reference. The two men exchanged glances before Tony excused himself, muttering something about some woman named Pepper and the end of the world.
"Sorry about that," Steve said, scooting over, making room for Elizabeth on the couch. She came at sat down beside them, sitting straight up and at attention, despite her brother lounging back on the couch.
She took that moment to look around her, taking in, once again, the lavishness that surrounded her. She was uncomfortable, she felt out of place.
"It's a lot, I know," Steve suddenly spoke up, noting her unease. "It took me a long while to adjust to the modern world."
"Every person that I want to turn to must be dead," Elizabeth suddenly whispered, thinking of Anita and Sarah.
"Not everyone's dead, Lizzie. You still have me, you know," Steve said, scooting closer to her.
"But you don't know me anymore, Steve. As much as you love me, I've changed. I'm not the strong-willed child you grew up with anymore," Elizabeth said, looking down at her hands and squeezing them into fists.
"That person is still in there, somewhere. It'll just take you a little while to find her," Steve said. "And even if you don't, I'll be here to help you figure out who you are now."
Elizabeth looked up to meet his eyes, almost like a reflection of her own. They both had been broken, and now he was trying to find his sister again. She opened her mouth to say something when he suddenly got a call from his phone, making both of them jump slightly. Steve gave a hasty laugh before standing and taking the phone out of his pocket as it rang.
